EU Ambassador Co-Chairs Steering Committee on €42M Rural Electrification Project in Southeastern Liberia

Monrovia, Liberia – Thursday, February 20, 2024 – The European Union (EU) Ambassador to Liberia, Nona Deprez, on yesterday co-chaired the inaugural Steering Committee meeting on the implementation of the €42 million Rural Electrification Project for Southeastern Liberia. The project aims to bring electricity to Buchanan, Greenville, and Barclayville, marking a significant step toward expanding energy access in the region.
The high-level meeting convened key stakeholders, including Deputy Ministers from the Ministries of Finance and Development Planning, and Mines and Energy. Also in attendance were the Executive Director of the Rural and Renewable Energy Agency (RREA), the Interim Managing Director of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), the Country Manager for TRANSCO-CLSG, development partners, and contractors.
Discussions focused on project progress, challenges, and mitigation strategies to ensure smooth implementation. Participants emphasized the importance of coordination, technical efficiency, and timely execution to maximize the project’s impact.
“This initiative reaffirms the European Union’s strong commitment to supporting Liberia’s energy sector and fostering sustainable development,” said Ambassador Deprez. “Reliable electricity is fundamental to economic growth, improved livelihoods, and overall national development.”
The Rural Electrification Project is a critical component of Liberia’s broader strategy to expand access to clean and affordable energy, particularly in underserved communities. With a total investment of €42 million, the initiative is expected to enhance economic opportunities, improve social services, and contribute to the country’s long-term development goals.
As implementation progresses, stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to addressing potential bottlenecks and ensuring that the project delivers lasting benefits for the people of Southeastern Liberia.
