Former Deputy House Speaker, Hans Barchue is Dead

Grand Bassa County District #1 Representative Hans Barchue is reported dead.

Rep. Barchue died early Tuesday morning, July 18, 2023, at the Europe Care Hospital in Monrovia, after a long period of illness, according to Ablee Jay TV, a local online platform in the county.

At the Liberian legislature, he served as Deputy Speaker from January 2012 to January 2018 at the 53rd Legislature.

He temporarily acted as Speaker from August to September 2016, when Speaker Alex Tyer formally resigned; which subsequently led to the election of Rep. Emmanuel Nuquay as Speaker.

The two-term lawmaker was seeking his third term in the pending October 10, 2023, general election as an independent candidate.

The late Rep. Barchue was a financial and security expert, and, as Deputy Speaker, he brought such skills to the 53rd Legislature.
