Ghana 3-1 Liberia: Black Star Record First Win Over Liberia After Two Decades
Ghana coasted to a comfortable 3-1 win over Liberia in Tuesday’s international friendly at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The host, who had a successful African Nations qualification group stage journey that ended them a ticket to Ivory Coast in January recorded their first victory over Liberia since July 1, 2001, when they defeated the LoneStar of Liberia 2-1 at the Samuel Kayon Doe Sports Stadium.
The match was the second leg of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Group “B” qualifying match between the two sides.
Liberia then defeated the Black Star of Ghana 2-0 on September 11, 2012, at the Samuel Kayon Doe Sports Stadium in an international friendly match.
Since then Yesterday’s encounter was the first meeting between the two West African Nations in Eleven Years.
The Black Stars took some time to get going and didn’t produce much upfront, bar a couple of wayward free-kicks from Kudus.
Liberia was the better side in the first Forty-Five minutes of play, with good ball coordination, accurate passing skills, and collective teamwork.
The Black Stars wasted no time in pressing for an early advantage, nearly breaking the deadlock a mere two minutes after kick-off.
However, an exceptional save by goalkeeper Boison Wynney kept Liberia’s hopes alive.
The best chance of the half, though, came the way of Ghanaian Semenyo when he was played through on goal but despite going past the goalkeeper Boison Wynney, his heavy touch let him down as the ball rolled out of play causing no trouble to the Lonestar of Liberia.
Throughout the game, Ghana maintained their dominance, effectively keeping the Liberian attack at bay, leaving them unable to register a single shot on target.
Ghana finally sprung to life in the second half, with Nuamah opening the scoring inside the Fifty-one minutes with a powerful right-footed strike that went in between the legs of goalkeeper Boison Wynney.
Nuamah, who played Club football for France giant Lyon, provided the assists that resulted in the second goal for Ghana.
Mohammed Kudus collected the ball inside the eighteen-yard area and fired in a left-foot finish to double the Black Stars’ lead in the Seventy-three minutes.
Substitute Jordan Ayew came on to add a third late on after some brilliant work down the flanks by debutant Jonathan Sowah but Liberia introduced one of the country’s promising and uprising stars Wonder Divine Teah and it took less than fifteen minutes for the Seventeen years old playmaker to get his name on the scoring sheet for Liberia to make it 3-1.
