GoL, EU Condemn Russia Invasion of Ukraine

The Government of Liberia and the European Union (EU) have recommit their condemnation of Russia’s “military aggression” against Ukraine which is in violation of international law.

It can be recalled that both parties (Liberia and the EU) separately condemned the illegal military action of Russia against the Government and people of Ukraine in line with the doctrine of respect for human rights and the international rule of law.

Delivering the Joint Communique on behalf of Liberia and the EU at the EU-LIBERIA TENTH POLITICAL DIALOGUE in Monrovia recently, Finance Minister Samuel D. Tweah said the move by Liberia and the EU is intended to build on the joint multilateral and regional efforts to promote peace and human rights, values of liberal democracy and respect for international rule of law.

Tweah stressed that it was the first of its kind for a standalone agenda point on Foreign Policy to be included in the meeting agenda of the EU-Liberia Political Dialogue.

In a related development, both the Government of Liberia and the European Union reaffirmed their support for the transition processes to return to constitutional democratic order in the Republics of Guinea, Mali and Burkina Faso, in close collaboration with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

It also dealt with the suspension announced by the Traditional Chiefs and Elders of Liberia back in February of this year for the period of three years.

In addition, Tweah said the Government of Liberia also updated the EU and its member states on the ongoing legal review of the legal abolition of the death penalty in Liberia.

The Dialogue is in line with Article 8 of the Cotonou Partnership Agreement between EU and the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States, which enables the establishment of a platform for regular and comprehensive political dialogue.

The 10th edition of the EU-Liberia Political Dialogue was co-chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Dee-Maxwell Kemayah and the Head of the Delegation of the EU to Liberia, Amb. Laurent Delahousse.

Both parties discussed a select number of issues of mutual interest, including EU-Liberia development cooperation over the 2021-2027 cycle, Good Governance, Mutual Accountability and Transparency, Human Rights, Foreign Policy Cooperation on regional multilateral issues, amongst others.
