LEC Hands Over Gbarnga Electricity Grid to Jungle Energy Power- Latest Liberian News

GBARNGA, Bong County – The Liberia Electricity Corporation has officially turned over the USAID-funded Gbarnga Grid to Jungle Energy Power for operation

Speaking at the event marking the signing ceremony between LEC and JEP for the distribution of assets, assignment, and electricity supply, Monie Captan, the Acting CEO and Board Chair of the Liberia Electricity Cooperation said JEP was selected to manage the grid in Gbarnga following a competitive bidding process.

Aimed at putting in place proper management mechanisms and promoting Public-Private Partnerships, Mr. Captan said JEP is now charged with the responsibility to manage the grid in the targeted communities.

Years back, the LEC boss indicated that the Liberian government was owing the West African Power Pool more than US$10 million due to the lack of management mechanism, but with the presence of Jungle Energy Power in Nimba and Bong, revenue generation from electricity has increased.

Mr. Captan discouraged power theft and called on every citizen of Bong County to work with the County authorities and JEP in lighting up the targeted areas.

Floyd Tomah, the Chief Executive Officer of Jungle Energy Power thanked the LEC and the Liberia Electricity Regulation Commission (LERC) for their confidence and promised to diligently serve their valuable customers.

Mr. Tomah disclosed that they have connected more than three thousand customers including some major public facilities. He said the company’s targeted is to connect 8,000 customers this year.
With the turnover, JEP is now operating two major grids, the first in Nimba and now in Bong.

Held at Passion Hotel during the weekend, the signing ceremony was witnessed by USAID representatives and prominent citizens of Bong County.
