Nimba vs Margibi, National County Sports Meet El Clásico Returns on Wednesday
The biggest match in the history of the National County Sports meet will take place on Wednesday afternoon when defending champions Nimba County takes on Margibi County in the first semifinal match at the Samuel Kayon Doe Sports Stadium in Paynesville City.
The County Meet El Clasico suffices in the competition whenever Nimba County and Margibi County meet at any stage of the competition.
Their longtime rival got underway in the 1978 knockout round when Nimba County defeated Marshall territory now Margibi County 3-1 to advance to the semifinals and when on winning their first County meet trophy.
The rivalry continued in the 1979 final when Nimba County defeated Marshall territory 1-0 to win its second County Meet trophy.
Gibi territory now Margibi County got her first win over Nimba County in 1984 final to lift her first County meet trophy and also collected her second victory in the 1985 quarterfinals when she defeated Nimba 4-0.
Margibi County again defeated Nimba County 3-2 in the 1987 semifinals but lost the final to Grand Kru County 4-1.
Since then the rivalry between the two sides continues to live on as generations come and go Nimba and Margibi battle remains the battle of Waterloo.
Nimba County has won the National County Sports Meet on five different occasions with the first and second coming in 1978 and 1979.
Nimba won her third and fourth trophies in 2010 against Grand Gedeh and 2011 against Margibi County with their fifth coming in 2022 against Gbarpolu County.
Meanwhile, Margibi County has won the County meet on two different occasions all against Nimba County with the first coming in the 1984 final and the 2012 final since then Margibi County has failed to lift the Nation’s biggest trophy.
Margibi County came close to lifting the trophy for the third time when she lost to Bomi County in the 2019 final in a post-match penalty.
