Nimba Women Slam Senator Twayen's Campaign Against ArcelorMittal Expansion

Nimba County: The Concerned Women of Nimba County have delivered a powerful blow to Senator Nya Twayen’s attempts to derail the ArcelorMittal Liberia Phase II Expansion Project, accusing him of playing politics with the livelihoods of thousands of Nimbaians.
In a bold statement issued Friday, the group comprising women leaders, market vendors, students, educators, and mothers from across the county condemned the Senator’s ongoing opposition to the ArcelorMittal expansion, branding it as “dangerous, divisive, and irresponsible.”
They warned that the lawmaker’s actions are not only short-sighted but could trigger an economic setback for Nimba, where thousands of families rely on the company for jobs, youth training, scholarships, and essential infrastructure such as roads and housing development.
The women emphasized that while ArcelorMittal has faced challenges in meeting every commitment, its presence remains a pillar of local stability. They called for constructive engagement not obstruction from elected officials who claim to represent the people.
According to the group, Senator Twayen’s repeated attacks on the company send a terrible message to both national and international investors and risk branding Nimba as a hostile environment for development and growth.
They praised Superintendent Kou Gono for providing calm, competent, and coordinated leadership during the launch of the expansion project, contrasting her efforts with what they described as the Senator’s “reckless outbursts and grandstanding.”
“We are tired of leaders who turn every opportunity into a battleground,” the statement declared. “Nimba needs bridges, not barricades. It needs solutions, not saboteurs.”
The women called on all other lawmakers from Nimba both in the Senate and House of Representatives to distance themselves from Twayen’s anti-investment rhetoric and instead align with the genuine needs of the people for jobs, growth, and peace.
They demanded that Senator Twayen immediately redirect his energy toward productive dialogue that holds the company accountable while protecting the interests of the community not tearing down what others have worked hard to build.
“Nimba’s future cannot be auctioned off for political clout,” the women warned. “We are watching. We are speaking. And we will not allow anyone not even a Senator to gamble with our children’s destiny.”
