Police Arrest One, Cite Student Unification Party Amid Violence At AMEU Campus
MONROVIA – The Liberia National Police has arrested one person in connection with the disturbances at the African Methodist Episcopal University (AMEU) campus on Wednesday, August 10 allegedly perpetrated by members of the Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP) of the University of Liberia.
The campus based political party has distanced itself from the act.
The Police have invited SUP for questioning. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the LNP said one of the perpetrators in person of Darius Tweh was arrested and is currently in police custody.
“The administration of the Liberia National Police condemns this act of violence and will ensure that justice is served. The act of student-base political groups leaving their campuses to create havoc for other citizens is totally unacceptable and barbaric,” the statement said.
It continued: “The Student Unification Party leadership is hereby invited to the office of the Deputy Inspector General of Police for Crime Services (CSD) Hon. Prince Mulbah at the Headquarters of the Liberia National Police, tomorrow August 11, 2022 at 0900hrs to answer to allegations levied against them by the African Methodist Episcopal University authorities.”
In the wake of the violence meted against SUP members on July 26, seven persons including a student leader of the AMEU, Abdurahman Barrie were arrested and have since been freed on bail. Though Police has not concluded its investigation, some students of AMEU have accused SUP of seeking revenge.
But SUP, in a statement said the allegation is a calculated plan to falsely accuse it stated that it will remain law abiding in its quest for justice for Christopher Walter Sisulu and all of its members who were brutalized allegedly by pro-government supporters.
“The Vanguard Student Unification Party categorically disassociates itself from any violence at AMEU as being propagated to smear the dignified character of the party by some unscrupulous elements. SUP has been calmed and very peaceful in pursuing justice for her militants and cadres who were badly brutalized by thugs on the instructions of George Weah through the degree fraudster in Jefferson Koijee on July 26, 2022.”
