‎Margibi County, Liberia: Police in Margibi County have arrested a 39-year-old man, identified as Nyumah Sesay, for his alleged involvement in the production and distribution of fraudulent National Identification Cards in Weala District.
‎
‎According to the Liberia National Police (LNP), the suspect was apprehended on Wednesday, March 11, following intelligence reports that he had been charging individuals Ten United States Dollars (US$10) to obtain National Identification Cards for residents within his community.
‎
‎Preliminary investigations revealed that Sesay, who reportedly operates a small computer shop in the area, was allegedly facilitating the illegal acquisition of the identification cards for several individuals seeking documentation.
‎
‎During police questioning, Sesay admitted that three unidentified individuals approached him at his shop requesting National Identification Cards. He told investigators that although he was not authorized to produce or process such documents, he collected US$10 from each person and later traveled to Monrovia where he obtained the cards from an unidentified individual believed to be involved in producing the fake documents.
‎
‎The suspect further informed investigators that he does not personally know the alleged producer and claimed that he does not have any contact information that could help authorities identify the individual responsible for printing the cards.
‎
‎Police investigators say their findings indicate that the fraudulent identification cards were intended to be used by the recipients to secure employment with the Jeety Rubber Corporation, a major agricultural concession company operating in Margibi County.
‎
‎Authorities say the alleged scheme raises concerns about the illegal production of government identification documents, which could undermine national security systems and the integrity of official records.
‎
‎Based on the outcome of the investigation, Nyumah Sesay has been formally charged with Tampering with Public Records and Forgery in violation of the Revised Penal Law of the Republic of Liberia.
‎
‎Police say the accused is currently in detention and will be forwarded to court for prosecution in keeping with Liberian law.
‎
‎Meanwhile, the Liberia National Police says it continues to investigate the matter in an effort to identify and apprehend the alleged producer of the fraudulent National Identification Cards believed to be operating in Monrovia.

Margibi County, Liberia: A former employee of Firestone Liberia is appealing to the company’s management to settle his retirement benefits, which he claims have remained largely unpaid for more than a decade following his retirement.
‎
‎Mr. William Cole, a resident of Reverse Town in Division #16 within the Firestone community in Margibi County, made the appeal during an interview with reporters over the weekend. According to him, despite retiring from the company in 2013 after years of service, he has yet to receive the full retirement benefits he believes are due him.
‎
‎Cole explained that shortly after his retirement, he was placed on a monthly retirement payment of eighty-eight United States dollars. However, he alleged that the amount was later drastically reduced to just seven United States dollars per month, a situation he described as unfair and deeply troubling.
‎
‎The former worker said the drastic reduction in his benefits has created serious hardship for him and his family. He noted that the small amount he currently receives is expected to cover basic needs such as food, healthcare, and the education of his children.
‎
‎“It is very difficult for me and my family,” Cole said. “After working for many years with the company, this is what I have to depend on to survive.”
‎
‎Mr. Cole further revealed that he and several other retired workers have been engaged in a prolonged legal battle with the management of Firestone Liberia for nearly nine years in an effort to obtain their full retirement benefits.
‎
‎According to him, the matter has been taken to court on multiple occasions, and the court has reportedly ruled in favor of the retired workers. Despite those rulings, Cole claims the payments have still not been fully settled.
‎
‎He added that the long delay in implementing the court’s decision has left many retirees facing severe financial difficulties, with some struggling to afford basic necessities such as medical care and daily meals.
‎
‎Cole is now calling on the Ministry of Labour (Liberia) and the Government of Liberia to intervene in the matter and ensure that the company complies with the court’s ruling.
‎
‎He expressed hope that the authorities will take the concerns of the retired workers seriously and help bring a resolution to the situation.
‎
‎“We served the company for many years and helped contribute to its success,” Cole said. “All we are asking for now is for the company to honor its responsibility and give us the benefits we worked for.”
‎
‎The management of Firestone Liberia has not yet publicly responded to the allegations made by the former employee. However, observers say the situation highlights ongoing concerns about the welfare and protection of retired workers in Liberia’s plantation sector.

GARZON COMMUNITY, MARGIBI COUNTY: Volunteer health workers at the Garzon Community Clinic in Division #16, Firestone District, Margibi County, are appealing to the Government of Liberia and the Ministry of Health to place them on government payroll and improve conditions at the health facility.

Speaking to reporters over the weekend at the clinic, the volunteers said they have been providing essential healthcare services to residents of Garzon Community and nearby towns for several years without receiving salaries from the government.

According to them, their continued service to the community comes despite serious personal hardships caused by the lack of stable income.

The health workers explained that many of them struggle daily to support their families while still dedicating their time and skills to caring for patients at the clinic.

“Even though we are volunteers, we remain committed to helping our people because this clinic is the only place many residents depend on for basic healthcare,” one of the health workers said.

The volunteers also raised concern about several challenges affecting the effective operation of the clinic. Among the major issues they highlighted are the lack of a toilet facility, inadequate medical supplies, absence of electricity, and the lack of a proper waiting area for pregnant women seeking care.

They further disclosed that the clinic has no staff quarters, making it difficult for health workers to properly perform their duties, especially during night shifts.

According to the volunteers, the lack of accommodation sometimes forces health workers to sleep in the same room with patients because there is no designated place for staff to stay.

The workers also revealed that the Garzon Community Clinic currently has only one government-employed health worker, while the rest of the personnel serving at the facility are volunteers.

They warned that if urgent action is not taken, the situation could eventually affect the quality of healthcare services being provided to residents in the area.

The volunteers are therefore calling on the Ministry of Health and the Government of Liberia to intervene by placing the volunteer health workers on payroll and addressing the infrastructure challenges facing the clinic.

They believe that employing the volunteers and improving the clinic’s conditions will greatly strengthen healthcare services for residents of Garzon Community and surrounding towns within Firestone District.

Residents of the area have also expressed hope that authorities will respond to the concerns raised, noting that the Garzon Community Clinic remains a vital healthcare center serving hundreds of people in the district.

Washington D.C: The United States job market slowed down last month as businesses cut about 92,000 jobs, according to CNN, citing new data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The figures surprised many economists who had expected the country to add about 60,000 new jobs, not lose them.

The unemployment rate also increased slightly, rising from 4.3 percent to 4.4 percent, meaning more people are now looking for work.

Several major industries recorded job losses. The health care sector lost about 28,000 jobs, partly because of a strike by thousands of nurses and health workers. The leisure and hospitality industry lost 27,000 jobs, while the construction sector lost around 11,000 jobs.

Experts say the report shows that the U.S. job market may not be as strong as many people believed. Over the past nine months, the economy has lost jobs in five of those months, raising concerns about the stability of the labor market.

Economists say several factors are creating uncertainty in the economy, including trade tensions, rising gas prices, global conflicts, and companies increasingly using artificial intelligence instead of hiring more workers.

However, analysts say the situation is not yet a major crisis, because layoffs remain relatively low and wages are still growing.

Overall, the report suggests that the U.S. economy may be slowing down and the job market is becoming more uncertain.

Kpor Town, Lower Margibi County: Excellence Vision Academy (EVA), a community-based school located in Kpor Town, New Vision Community, District #1 in Lower Margibi County, is appealing for urgent support as it struggles to provide education to hundreds of children despite limited resources.

During a one-day media visit on March 5, 2026, students, teachers, and administrators of the institution shared the challenges they face while continuing to serve as the only school available to children in the community.

Founded in 2024, Excellence Vision Academy currently provides education for children from Kpor Town and surrounding communities where residents estimate more than 1,000 school-age children live. For many parents, the school represents the only nearby opportunity for their children to receive formal education without traveling long distances.

Speaking during the visit, the school’s proprietor Mr. Melvin C. B. Donzo said the institution is facing serious financial and logistical challenges that threaten its growth and operations.

According to Mr. Donzo, many parents in the community are struggling economically, making it difficult for them to consistently pay tuition. The situation, he explained, has affected the school’s ability to improve its facilities, support teachers, and provide essential learning materials.

“We are doing everything possible to keep the school running, but the challenges are serious,” Mr. Donzo said. “Many parents want their children to learn, but the economic situation makes it difficult for them to meet their obligations.”

The school currently operates with limited educational resources, including shortages of desks, armchairs, chalkboards, and other basic classroom materials needed for effective teaching and learning.

In addition to learning materials, the school also needs improved infrastructure to accommodate the increasing number of students enrolling each year.

Mr. Donzo is therefore calling on well-meaning Liberians, humanitarian organizations, NGOs, private donors, and the Government of Liberia to assist the school with educational supplies, infrastructure development, and financial support.

He believes such assistance would significantly improve the learning environment and help ensure that children in Kpor Town and nearby communities have consistent access to quality education.

Despite the challenges, the administration of Excellence Vision Academy says it remains committed to its mission of educating young people and providing hope for the next generation.

“Even with the difficulties, we are determined to keep moving forward because the future of these children depends on the education they receive today,” Mr. Donzo added.

Community members remain hopeful that with increased awareness and support, the school can grow into a stronger institution capable of shaping the lives of hundreds of children in Lower Margibi County.

Rivercess, Liberia: The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) has confiscated five dredges used in illegal mining operations beneath the Cestos River Bridge in Rivercess County following a coordinated enforcement action aimed at protecting the country’s natural resources and critical infrastructure.

The operation, carried out by the Ministry’s Rivercess County Office in collaboration with state security officers and local authorities, came after weeks of surveillance and mounting concerns about the environmental damage and potential structural danger posed by dredging activities along the Cestos River.

Officials said the miners had repeatedly evaded earlier enforcement attempts by fleeing the area in speedboats whenever security teams approached the mining site.

According to Moses Kollie, Mining Agent for the Yarnee Mining District and a professional mining engineer, the illegal dredging operations had begun posing a serious threat to public safety, particularly for motorists and commuters who depend on the Cestos River Bridge.

“For some time now, these dredgers have been threatening the safety of commuters accessing the Cestos River Bridge,” Kollie said. “Whenever enforcement teams attempted to reach the site, the operators would escape using speedboats.”

Authorities said sustained monitoring and coordination with local officials eventually enabled the Ministry to move in and dismantle the operation. During the crackdown, five dredges and other mining equipment were seized, effectively halting the illegal activities.

The confiscated equipment is currently in the custody of the Ministry of Mines and Energy as investigations continue and further regulatory action is being considered.

The operation was led by Rivercess County Mines Officer Lincoln G. Gbelee, working alongside Resident Geologist Oumaru Jabateh and Mining Agent Moses Kollie.

Security support was provided by Rivercess County Commander Elton Goffa of the Liberia National Police, whose officers ensured the safe seizure of the illegal equipment.

Local government authorities in the Yarnee District also assisted in the operation, which aimed to prevent potential structural damage to the Cestos River Bridge.

The enforcement action followed a complaint filed by Resident Geologist Oumaru Jabateh, who reported ongoing dredging activities directly beneath the bridge.

Jabateh warned that removing large volumes of soil from the riverbed could weaken the bridge’s foundation over time and lead to serious structural damage.

“I observed continuous mining activities under the bridge, which raised serious geological concerns,” Jabateh said. “The dredging removes large volumes of soil from beneath the riverbed, and over time this could weaken the structural stability of the bridge.”

He cautioned that if the mining activities were allowed to continue unchecked, erosion beneath the bridge could eventually compromise its foundation and pose a major risk.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy has called on residents in mining communities to report illegal mining activities, particularly those occurring near national infrastructure.

Director of Mines Alwell Aloysius Carr described the operation as a clear warning to individuals engaged in illicit mining across Liberia.

“This clampdown sends a strong message to illegal operators that violations of the Minerals and Mining Law will not be tolerated,” Carr said. “Anyone caught engaging in such unlawful activities will face the full weight of the law.”

Carr added that with the support of the Ministry’s senior management, led by Minister R. Matenokay Tingban, the Bureau of Mines will continue to strengthen enforcement efforts aimed at protecting the environment and promoting responsible mining practices.

Authorities say the Rivercess operation reflects the government’s broader commitment to safeguarding Liberia’s natural resources, enforcing mining regulations, and protecting infrastructure critical to national development.

GBEAPO KANWEAKEN CITY, River Gee: Officers of the Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA) in River Gee County have arrested two women in connection with alleged drug trafficking following the seizure of sixty compressed plates of marijuana during a security operation in Gbeapo Kanweaken City.

River Gee County LDEA Commander Bill Cooper confirmed the arrests to journalists Wednesday, saying the operation was carried out after intelligence gathered from community sources indicated suspected drug activities in the area.

According to Commander Cooper, the principal suspect, Asha Bangoria, 41, a Sierra Leonean national, was apprehended during what authorities described as a plain-view operation conducted by officers of the county detachment.

During the arrest, LDEA officers reportedly discovered sixty compressed plates of marijuana concealed in two large cartons, which investigators believe were prepared for distribution within River Gee County and possibly neighboring areas.

Authorities estimate the street value of the seized drugs at approximately US$6,000, equivalent to about LRD$1,080,000, making the confiscation one of the notable drug interceptions recently recorded in the county.

Also arrested in connection with the case is Mamie David, a 50-year-old Liberian national. Investigators believe she acted as an accomplice in the suspected trafficking operation.

Commander Cooper disclosed that the principal suspect had been under surveillance for several months following repeated reports from community members linking her to suspected drug distribution activities in parts of the county.

“We had been monitoring her movements for some time based on information received from community residents,” Cooper said. “The arrest was made possible through the cooperation between our officers and the local community.”

The River Gee County LDEA Detachment says both suspects are currently undergoing further investigation. Authorities indicated that upon completion of the investigative process, the suspects will be formally charged and forwarded to court in keeping with Liberia’s drug control laws.

Meanwhile, several residents of River Gee County have welcomed the arrests, describing the operation as a major step in addressing the growing concern over illegal drugs in the area.

Community members said the presence of illicit substances has increasingly affected young people and praised the LDEA for what they called swift and decisive action in disrupting suspected drug trafficking activities in Gbeapo Kanweaken City.

Commander Cooper reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to combating illegal drug activities across the county and warned that individuals engaged in trafficking or distribution will face the full force of the law.

He also called on citizens to continue providing credible information to help authorities track and dismantle drug networks operating within the county.

“The fight against drugs cannot be carried out by law enforcement alone,” Cooper said. “We depend on the cooperation of our communities to protect the future of our young people and ensure the safety of our society.”

Capitol Hill, Monrovia: Justice Minister and Attorney General, Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh, has formally apologized to the Liberian Senate following what he described as an inadvertent procedural misstep involving a subpoena issued against the legislative body.‎

‎Appearing before the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Claims and Petition on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, Minister Tweh acknowledged that a writ of subpoena issued to the Senate was done without his authorization and in breach of established inter-branch protocols.

‎The Minister clarified that the decision stemmed from procedural errors by members of his legal team, whose actions he described as overzealous but ultimately inconsistent with proper legal and constitutional channels.‎

‎According to Minister Tweh, the writ of subpoena issued by Criminal Court “A” in connection with an audit report failed to take into account the necessary institutional procedures required when one branch of government seeks legal action involving another.

‎He stressed that the Ministry of Justice remains committed to due process and the preservation of harmonious working relations between the Executive and Legislative branches.

‎“The pathway taken did not reflect the appropriate inter-branch protocol,” Minister Tweh told lawmakers, noting that the subpoena was subsequently quashed under his directive once he was fully apprised of the matter.‎

‎The Attorney General assured Senators that corrective administrative measures would be implemented to prevent a recurrence of similar errors.

‎‎The controversy arose after government lawyers sought a writ of subpoena duces tecum before Resident Circuit Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie. The writ aimed to compel senior officials of the Liberian Senate to produce key financial documents linked to an audit report that allegedly highlighted “unexplained gaps” in certain spending categories.

‎The requested documents reportedly included:

‎Minister Tweh reaffirmed his respect for the authority and independence of the Legislature, emphasizing that transparency and accountability must be pursued within the framework of constitutional order and mutual institutional respect.‎

‎He further assured members of the Senate that the Ministry of Justice remains steadfast in its responsibility to uphold the rule of law while safeguarding democratic governance principles.

Kolahun District, Lofa County: A tragic fire has claimed the life of Pastor Nodorbor Johnson in Kolahun District, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

The incident happened Saturday during a routine farm-burning exercise. Pastor Johnson was helping with the seasonal clearing when the fire spread faster than expected and trapped him.

A 15-man jury investigated the scene and ruled out foul play. Jurors said the pastor tried to escape but the flames closed in before he could reach safety.

Authorities say shifting winds likely made the fire worse, a common danger during dry-season burning in rural areas. The Liberia National Police accepted the jury’s findings and warned farmers to take extra care during land-clearing activities.

Pastor Johnson was well known in Gbandi Chiefdom for his service at Ndambu Evangelical Church and for his support to families across the area. Residents described him as humble, hardworking, and devoted to his ministry.

His death has brought deep sorrow to the district. Church members and community residents have held prayer services and vigils, while tributes continue to come from clergy and local leaders.

Pastor Johnson leaves behind six children and grieving relatives, who are asking the community and well-wishers for support during this difficult period.

As Kolahun District mourns, the tragedy underscores the dangers of seasonal farm burning — a long-standing practice that can become deadly when not carefully controlled.

MONROVIA, LIBERIA: The Rural and Renewable Energy Agency (RREA) has formally requested a 10-megawatt (MW) electricity allocation from the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) to expand power supply across the Port City of Buchanan beginning October 2026.

‎

‎The request marks a major step toward expanding reliable electricity access in Grand Bassa County, as part of the government’s broader electrification drive.

‎

‎In a formal communication addressed to LEC’s Managing Director, Mohammed Sherif, RREA Executive Director Samuel B. Nagbe, Jr. emphasized the urgent need for confirmation of power availability from the CLSG substation located on the outskirts of Buchanan.

‎

‎This is the second formal request submitted by the Agency within the past two years, underscoring the strategic importance of securing adequate power supply ahead of the project’s commissioning date.

‎

‎The Buchanan electrification project falls under Liberia’s Rural Electrification Program targeting specific counties.

The initiative is funded through the 11th European Development Fund under a Financing Agreement signed in May 2020 between the Government of Liberia and the European Commission.

‎

‎The program is designed to expand access to reliable electricity, ‎ stimulate local economic growth and improve living conditions in underserved regions.

‎Under the project, approximately six kilometers of a 33kV sub-transmission line is being constructed from the 225/33kV CLSG substation to Buchanan’s City's border. In addition, a comprehensive distribution backbone is being installed across the City.

‎

‎Once completed and commissioned, the infrastructure would connect more than 12,000 homes and businesses.

The Rural and Renewable Energy Agency disclosed that the request follows a directive from the LUSE Project Steering Committee, which mandated the Agency to formally confirm the availability of power from the CLSG substation by the end of October 2026.

MONROVIA, LIBERIA: Liberia has taken center stage in West Africa’s financial integration agenda by hosting the Joint ECOWAS Statutory Meetings, bringing together the region’s top financial policymakers, central bank governors, regulators, and technical experts to find a sustainable path to guide monetary integration across West Africa.

The high-level meetings, convened by the ECOWAS Commission, kicked off on Wednesday, February 4, in Monrovia and will run through the 13th. The initiative is held in collaboration with key regional financial institutions, including the West African Monetary Agency (WAMA), the West African Monetary Institute (WAMI), and the West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management (WAIFEM).

The sessions aim to strengthen regional financial stability, harmonize supervisory frameworks, and advance preparations for deeper monetary integration.

The opening day sets the tone for cooperative activities. The forum provides a critical platform for regulators to assess cross-border risks, share supervisory experiences, and coordinate policy responses in an increasingly interconnected financial landscape.

Delivering the keynote address, Executive Governor of the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), Henry F. Saamoi, reaffirmed Liberia’s strong commitment to regional integration, financial resilience, and harmonized regulatory standards.

He emphasized that in the current global financial system, effective cross-border supervision is no longer optional but a core requirement for safeguarding financial stability.

"As financial institutions expand beyond national borders, coordinated supervision and information sharing among regulators are essential to managing systemic risks," Governor Saamoi noted.

For his part, the Director General of the West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management, Dr. Baba Yusuf Musa, urged the gathering to invest in training programs and deepen partnerships with international institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

According to Dr. Musa, equipping policymakers and regulators with modern analytical tools remains vital to navigating evolving macroeconomic and financial challenges in the region.

"Discussions at the College of Insurance Supervisors centered on strengthening insurance regulation ahead of the proposed ECOWAS single currency," he noted.

Diplomats say Liberia’s hosting of the Joint ECOWAS Statutory Meetings underscores the country’s increasingly active role in advancing ECOWAS financial sector objectives.

The move also indicates Liberia's determination to reinforce regional cooperation, support institutional reform, and contribute to efforts aimed at achieving sustainable economic growth and long-term financial stability across West Africa.

As the meetings continue over the coming days, participants are expected to adopt key recommendations that will shape the future of regional supervision, monetary cooperation, and economic integration within the sub-region.

RIVER GEE COUNTY, LIBERIA: The Depecpo Public School in Deabo Parken, River Gee County, is becoming a life-threatening learning environment for students who sit under crumbling roofs to pursue education.

Depecpo Public School, one of the oldest in the Southerneastern region is said to be grappling with longstanding infrastructural challenges, ranging from dilapidated classrooms, offices, chairs and a poor sanitary environment among others.

The situation has claimed the attention of many across the county, as parents, educators and community leaders alarm fear over the well-being of students relative to the deteriorating state of the school.

The school’s principal, Daniel Copeland, recently told the journalists that the severe shortage of classrooms, desks, and administrative offices, has made it increasingly difficult for the school to accommodate its growing student population.

According to Copeland, overcrowded classrooms and weakened structures have created an unsafe learning environment that poses serious risks to both pupils and teachers.

Established in 1972, the Depecpo Public School was originally constructed through community self-help initiatives. Over the decades, residents have made goodwill gestures to recondition the school's facility whenever damages occurred.

However, the Depecpo Public School Principal said the scale of the current deterioration has surpassed what the community is capacitated to handle.

“The people have done all they can. The building is badly damaged, and the community can no longer continue with self-renovation,” he explained.

Due to the prevailing constraints, the school administration has been forced to erect a temporary structure to house offices for teachers, the registrar, and the principal — an arrangement that further highlights the urgent need for permanent facilities.

The School authority says the infrastructure crisis is compounded by staffing challenges. According to information, the Depecpo Public School currently has only two government-paid teachers, supported by five volunteer instructors.

Principal Daniel Copeland has therefore appealed to the Ministry of Education to place additional teachers on the government payroll to improve teaching and learning outcomes in the area.

Meanwhile, several residents have expressed frustration over the outlook of the school, and said it indicates a neglect of education in the county.

“Since the time of our forefathers, there has been no government project in Deabo no school, no health facility, nothing. Are we truly part of River Gee County or Liberia?” said, one of the residents, Mercy Nyanpan.

Residents at the same time called on the county authority and the national government to swiftly intervene and restructure the Depecpo Public School's facility.

Many believe that doing so will restore pride for education in the County.

The Depecpo Public School, an Elementary and Junior School, is said to be one of the major hubs for access to Education in River Gee, particularly in Deabo Parken, hosting hundreds of pupils from different locations.

PAYNESVILLE, LIBERIA: A Liberian national identified as Edwin Mulbah has come to a point of controversy and is said to be on the run after a violent encounter with his longtime girlfriend, Rachel Korto, that reportedly led to the lady's death in the Soul Clinic Community, in Paynesville.

The incident occurred on Sunday night and has since left residents shocked, and with many raising urgent questions about domestic violence in Liberia.

The altercation reportedly escalated when Rachel was struck with a cooking pot and mocked with a frying pan, while Mulbah allegedly turned up the music in their room to mask the sounds of the attack.

These details, coupled with the circumstances surrounding the attack, have intensified calls for accountability and swift action from authorities.

According to report, Rachel had spent the evening with friends before returning home, where sources indicate Mulbah arrived around 11:00 pm on January 25, 2026, sparking an argument that quickly turned violent.

Report indicate that a minor living with the couple, whose identity is withheld for protection, witnessed Rachel collapse and lose consciousness as Mulbah fled the scene, leaving neighbors and family in immediate distress.

Neighbors responded immediately, rushing Rachel to Benson Hospital in a desperate effort to save her. Due to the severity of her injuries, hospital authorities referred her to John F. Kennedy Medical Center (JFK), where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

In the aftermath, Rachel’s family has formally appealed to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Ministry of Justice, the Government of Liberia, and the Liberia National Police to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation, secure the immediate arrest of Mulbah, and hold all responsible parties accountable under Liberian law.

As of press time, the Liberia National Police had not confirmed Mulbah’s whereabouts, leaving the community anxious for answers and reinforcing the urgent need for stronger protections, public awareness campaigns, and systemic measures to safeguard victims of domestic violence across Liberia.

TODEE, MONTSERRADO COUNTY: A rising outbreak of Measles in Todee Statutory District, of Lower Montserrado County, has claimed the life of a four-year-old child, while several others battle critical illnesses of the disease.

Residents say the outbreak began roughly two weeks ago and have affected over 16 children across two local communities.

Rebecca Williams, the Grandmother of the child who fell prey to the disease, said it began developing in the form of heat bumps that took over the child's skin.

Madam Williams told K-News that they later realize the illnesses to be as a result of Measles, at a time when it has severely affected the kid's internal system.

She explained that her teenage grandson suffered sorely mouth and skin rashes before ultimately succumbing to the disease.

“As the sickness worsened, his skin became extremely hot, sores developed in his mouth, and he could no longer talk to us,” Madam Williams told K-News.

She said traditional medicines were used in the process to manage the illnesses, but did not yield positive results—marking the first recorded death linked to the outbreak.

Health workers at the Yeagbah Town Public Clinic have confirmed at least two confirmed measles cases from the most affected communities in Todee District.

Reports say more cases may go unreported due to limited access to healthcare facilities and low public awareness about the disease within affected areas.

Meanwhile, residents have expressed fear about their lives particularly with the kids, and called on the government through the Ministry of Health to promptly intervene and address the public health crisis.

Community dwellers at the same time have voiced frustration over the lack of awareness campaigns and the apparent unavailability of measles vaccination centers in affected areas.

They are calling on the Ministry of Health to urgently deploy medical teams, conduct awareness campaigns, and provide vaccines to prevent further loss of lives particularly among children, who remain the most vulnerable.

Many revealed that in the absence of medical supplies, they have heavily relied on traditional remedies, including the use of “King Juice," a locally available beverage, as a form of treatment.

As fears continue to mount, residents warn that without immediate intervention, the outbreak could spread further, deepening an already fragile public health situation in the district.

The incident occurred on Sunday, January 18, 2026, a short distance from the town, when the tanker reportedly caught fire, causing the chemical to leak into the surrounding environment, including a nearby rubber plantation.

Eyewitnesses told journalists that the chemical flowed through farmlands and moved dangerously close to a community hand pump, which serves as the primary source of drinking water and domestic use for residents.

One resident, speaking out of fear and frustration, said the community no longer feels safe, stressing that the chemical passed alarmingly close to the very hand pump from which residents draw their drinking water.
According to the tanker driver, Isaac Blamo, the fire was caused by a burst tire that immediately ignited flames, engulfing the vehicle and damaging the chemical container, which led to the spill.

The tanker was en route to MNG Gold Liberia Inc.’s mining site in Kokoyah Statutory District #1 but was traveling through Electoral District #2 when the incident occurred.

Tensions escalated on Monday morning as residents mounted roadblocks, demanding the immediate intervention of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other relevant government authorities.
Affected community members are calling on the Liberian government, through the EPA, to conduct an urgent environmental and public health investigation. They are also urging MNG Gold Liberia Inc. to provide safe drinking water, food assistance, and medical services. Additionally, residents appealed to Representative James Kolleh and the Bong County Legislative Caucus to intervene on their behalf.

Residents report acute water scarcity, air pollution, and fear of chemical inhalation, adding that nearby creeks and other water sources are now suspected to be contaminated.

As of the time of this report, neither the Environmental Protection Agency nor the Bong County Legislative Caucus has issued an official statement regarding the incident.
In response to rising tensions, MNG Gold Liberia authorities—including the company’s Environmental Head, Mr. Raphael Akoi Kennedy Sr., and the mine’s Senior Health Assistant, Mr. Moses Junior—visited the community and urged residents to remain calm while the company works to address the situation.

Following the engagement, the company provided 30 bags of 25-kilogram rice and 40 sacks of bottled mineral water to affected residents. However, community members insist that the assistance is inadequate, emphasizing the need for a long-term clean water supply, continuous medical monitoring, and comprehensive environmental remediation.

The chemical involved in the incident, hydrochloric acid, is a highly corrosive substance commonly used in gold mining operations to clean and process ores, remove impurities, and regulate acidity during mineral extraction.

While hydrochloric acid plays an important role in industrial processes, environmental experts warn that uncontrolled exposure poses serious risks to human health and the environment. Such exposure can contaminate surface and groundwater, destroy soil fertility and vegetation, cause skin burns, eye damage, and respiratory problems, and kill aquatic life when it enters streams and wetlands. Experts caution that acid leakage near farmlands and water sources presents long-term ecological dangers, particularly for rural communities that depend heavily on natural water systems for survival.

MNG Gold Liberia Inc. is a gold mining concession company operating in Kokoyah Statutory District #1, Bong County. The company has been active in Liberia’s mining sector for several years and is known for large-scale gold extraction.

In 2017, the company was linked to a major cyanide spill that raised national concerns about chemical handling, environmental protection, and regulatory oversight in the mining industry.

As investigations are awaited, residents of Money Sweet Town continue to live with uncertainty over the safety of their water, air, and farmlands. Environmental advocates are urging authorities to act swiftly to prevent another environmental disaster and to ensure that mining activities do not come at the expense of community health and ecological sustainability.

Robertsville, White Plains Township: A somber cloud has settled over Harts Town in the Robertsville community following the tragic deaths of three men who lost their lives while cleaning a residential well, authorities have confirmed.

The victims have been identified as George Askie (25), Prince Kudah (32), and Sumo Qoingewu (age not disclosed). The incident occurred during what was intended to be a routine well-cleaning exercise but quickly turned fatal under dangerous conditions.

A 15-member coroner’s jury investigated the matter and ruled out any foul play, concluding that the deaths were accidental. According to preliminary findings, the men were contracted by Janneh Hiama, the owner of the well, to clean the structure for a fee of US$150.

Investigators revealed that the men used a water-pump machine inside the well continuously for more than an hour. Authorities say this prolonged operation significantly reduced the oxygen levels inside the confined space. Despite the danger, the men reportedly lacked proper safety equipment, ventilation tools, or oxygen monitoring devices.

Reports indicate that one of the men later descended into the well manually to inspect or continue the cleaning process but failed to resurface. Alarmed by his prolonged absence, the two remaining men entered the well in an attempt to rescue him. Tragically, all three became trapped and were overcome by oxygen deprivation.

Authorities confirmed that the cause of death was asphyxiation due to oxygen depletion, a common risk in enclosed spaces such as wells and pits. A dog that reportedly fell into the well during the incident also died, further confirming the lack of breathable air within the shaft.

Emergency responders, with the assistance of local residents, later retrieved the bodies from the well. The recovery effort drew a large crowd and left the community in shock. Residents described the deceased as hardworking and dependable young men, noting that their sudden deaths have devastated their families and neighbors.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, officials instructed the well owner to refill and permanently seal the well to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Community leaders and safety advocates have also renewed calls for increased public awareness about the dangers associated with confined spaces, including wells, septic tanks, and pits that lack proper ventilation.

As families prepare to lay their loved ones to rest, authorities continue to urge the public to adhere to basic safety standards and seek professional guidance when undertaking hazardous tasks.

Officials emphasized that proper training, safety equipment, and ventilation can mean the difference between life and death in confined-space operations.

BONG COUNTY, LIBERIA: Nyantarku Public School, a primary educational institution serving Koryah Town and its surrounding villages in Panta District, is experiencing a notable decline in student enrollment following a destructive windstorm that severely damaged the school’s infrastructure and disrupted academic activities.

The school, which has long functioned as a critical pillar of rural education in Bong County, was struck by a violent rainstorm on November 15, 2025, an event now regarded by local authorities and residents as the most significant setback in its recent history.

The storm tore the roofs off four classrooms, leaving large sections of the campus exposed and rendering the learning environment largely unconducive for pupils and teachers alike.

Although comprehensive public records detailing the school’s founding remain limited, Nyantarku Public School is widely recognised for its longstanding role in providing accessible, government-supported primary education to children from underserved rural communities.

Prior to the storm, the institution operated with several dedicated classroom structures, though concerns had persistently been raised by parents and local education stakeholders about the ageing nature of its facilities, particularly when contrasted with newer, state-of-the-art secondary schools constructed in urban centres such as Gbarnga.

In the aftermath of the storm, school administrators were compelled to adopt emergency measures in order to sustain academic instruction. With four classrooms rendered unusable, multiple classes were merged into the remaining spaces, creating overcrowded conditions that have since strained both instructional quality and student wellbeing.

Speaking to the media, the school's Principal, John Yarkapawolo confirmed that nearly 20 students have withdrawn from the school since the incident, a development he attributed to growing parental anxiety over safety, overcrowding, and the overall deterioration of learning conditions.

“We have already lost close to 20 students, and the number continues to increase as parents become more worried each day,” he said.

He warned that enrollment continues to decline, placing the school’s academic stability for the 2025–2026 academic year at serious risk.

According to Principal Yarkapawolo, the sustained disruption threatens to derail the educational progress of many children within Koryah Town and neighbouring villages.

“If this situation is not addressed urgently, some children may stay home for too long, and others may never return to school,” he cautioned.

The consolidation of classes has led to learning environments originally designed for approximately forty-five pupils now accommodating far greater numbers.

Teachers report that excessive heat, poor ventilation, and limited space have become daily challenges, significantly undermining effective teaching and student concentration.

Parents and guardians have been frequently observed around the damaged school premises, closely monitoring the situation with visible apprehension.

Many have questioned whether meaningful learning can be sustained under conditions that compromise both safety and comfort.

“This place is no longer good for learning,” one parent remarked, as others looked on anxiously.

Principal Yarkapawolo, who has been a consistent advocate for government support to strengthen the school’s resilience against climate-related disasters, described the storm as sudden and unusually severe.

“This was completely unexpected, and climate change is playing a major role in what we are facing today,” he said, stressing that the school lacks the financial and technical capacity to undertake major repairs independently.

The former workers, many of them retirees, claim they have been left stranded despite years of service to the company. Some allege they were injured on the job and later forced into early retirement, but have still been unable to access benefits they believe are guaranteed under Liberia’s labor and social protection laws.

Several of the retirees accuse Firestone management of refusing engagement, claiming that repeated attempts to seek clarification and resolution were either ignored or met with no formal response.

At the center of the dispute is the claim that Firestone allegedly failed to properly process contributions to the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP) for affected employees, leaving many without support in retirement. Former workers say the situation has pushed some of them into severe hardship, struggling to meet basic needs despite spending years serving one of Liberia’s most profitable concession companies.

The development has sparked renewed public questions over corporate accountability and the enforcement role of state institutions meant to protect workers, especially within Liberia’s concession sector.

VOINJAMA, LOFA COUNTY: Lofa County Senator Momo Cyrus has raised serious concerns over alleged illegal mining activities in remote forests, and secret nighttime operations of aircraft landing at the Tennebu Airstrip in Voinjama, Lofa County.

Senator Cyrus alarmed that he has received intelligence that these actions are happening under unclear circumstances. The Lofa County Senator stated that the reported nighttime landings of aircraft and the secret logging operations taking place in parts of the county are in grave violation of aviation and environmental regulations.

Speaking recently, the Lawmaker disclosed that the reported flights have not followed clear aviation schedules and have been allegedly occurring without the visible presence or oversight of standard aviation, immigration, or security authorities.

He believes that the aircraft movements may be linked to foreign nationals operating in parts of Lofa County. Senator Cyrus cautioned that the circumstances surrounding the reported landings of aircraft in the area for unknown reasons could spark tension and erode trust in state institutions.

Additionally, the Senate Chair on Defense, Security, and Intelligence, Momo Cyrus, claimed that preliminary information surrounding the secret logging points to the involvement of some Chinese nationals who are engaged in mining operations in the county.

According to him, the act undermines the standards and regulations set by state authorities, fuels corruption, and exposes rural communities to exploitation.

“Our people must know what is happening on their land,” Senator Cyrus said. “Any mining or resource extraction must follow the law, respect environmental standards, and ensure that host communities directly benefit. Liberia’s natural resources cannot be taken under the cover of darkness.”

Meanwhile, Senator Momo Cyrus has called on the relevant institutions, including the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the Liberia Civil Aviation Authority, the Ministry of Justice, and the Liberia Immigration Service, to launch an immediate investigation into the matter.

He urged the relevant authorities to review the operational permits, travel documents, mining licenses, and environmental compliance records of all foreign nationals currently operating in Lofa County.

According to the Senator, such a comprehensive review is critical not only to clarify the nature of alleged acts but also to determine whether there have been breaches of Liberian laws governing mineral exploration, land use, airspace control, and national security.

However, local residents of Voinjama and surrounding communities have expressed fear about unusual nighttime movements and heightened activities near forested areas.

Community members have also joined calls for the government to act swiftly to protect their environment. As of the time of this report, no official response has been issued by local government authorities, aviation regulators, or security agencies regarding the alleged aircraft movements or the claims of illegal mining activities.

The situation continues to draw public attention as calls intensify for accountability, enforcement of the law, and decisive government action to safeguard Liberia’s natural resources and national sovereignty.

CAREYSBURG CITY, MONTSERRADO COUNTY: The Careysburg Magisterial Court has issued a stop order on the construction of the Weighbridge project in Careysburg City due to environmental safety concerns and land ownership disputes.

The Weighbridge project is under construction by the Ministry of Transport through the National Road Fund. The Weighbridge aims to track overloaded vehicles and design mechanisms to prevent road damage.

The court's stay order on the project followed documents presented by residents, which indicated that the project site lies in a protected wetland within the city.

In addition to the environmental safety concerns, residents noted that alleged backfilling of the site was already underway and that natural waterways were blocked, raising fears about flooding and long-term erosion.

“This project is being constructed on a wetland, and the continued backfilling poses serious environmental risks to surrounding communities,” one of the petitioners told the court during the hearing.

Officials of the Ministry of Transport have consistently argued that the facility would help curb overloading by trucks, a major contributor to road deterioration and traffic accidents, with the environmental risks considered.

The Weighbridge project site in Careysburg has also become a subject of heated land ownership claims. The Sims family in the area formally petitioned the court, claiming legal ownership of a parcel of the designated land for the project.

“This land has never been lawfully acquired by the city or the Ministry of Transport,” a representative of the Sims family told the court. “Any development taking place there is being done without our consent.”

Court filings further revealed that parts of the same property were previously sold to another family, deepening the conflicts over ownership claims and casting doubt on how the land was made available for public use.

Meanwhile, during the proceedings, Careysburg City Mayor Edwin Urey was summoned to appear before the court to provide insights on the land disputes surrounding the project site.

Speaking to judicial reporters after his appearance quite recently, Mayor Urey stated: “We are not happy with the stay order, but we respect the rule of law. As city authorities, we acted in what we believed was the best interest of development, road safety, and the economic well-being of our people.”

He further clarified that the city's cooperation with the project is not intended to violate any environmental or land regulations".

“At no point did the city set out to break the law or damage the environment,” he added. “We will fully cooperate with the court and all relevant agencies as investigations continue," Mayor Edwin Urey said.

The Careysburg City Mayor, at the same time, appealed for calm among residents, noting that the legal process will determine the future of the project.

The matter has since been adjourned to allow the court to further review evidence and hear additional arguments from all parties.

MONROVIA, LIBERIA: Vehzelee Sumo, Media Adviser to House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, has publicly accused Cecelia Kpor Koon of falsely presenting herself as the wife of the Speaker, stating that she is rather a biological sister of Speaker Koon.

In a statement released Wednesday, December 24, 2025, Advisor Sumo referenced an earlier disclosure labeled “Part 1,” in which he asserted that Cecelia Koon Kpor is listed as a daughter of the late Samuel Blamo Koon, Sr., the Speaker’s father.

He said the claim is supported by documentary evidence, including the late Koon’s funeral program, which he argues directly contradicts Cecelia’s public claims of being legally married to the Speaker.

“We established in Part 1 that Cecelia Koon Kpor is the biological sister of the Speaker and not his legally wedded wife, as she has publicly claimed,” Sumo stated.

Advisor Sumo announced that a second statement, “Part 2,” will be released shortly to address why Cecelia Koon Kpor opted to take the matter to public platforms such as Spoon Talk rather than pursuing resolution through the courts.

He suggested that the decision to litigate the issue in the media raises critical questions about motive.

The allegation has triggered sharp public reaction, with critics questioning the involvement of the Speaker’s office in what appears to be a family dispute, while others argue that the use of alleged false marital status carries potential legal and reputational implications.

As of publication, Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon and Cecelia Koon Kpor have not responded.

The Public attention is now fixed on the anticipated release of “Part 2,” as the controversy continues to unfold and attract national scrutiny.

MONROVIA, LIBERIA: The Political Leader of the Movement for Progressive Change (MPC), Simeon Freeman, has branded the Unity Party government as directionless after nearly two in office.

Speaking at a press conference in Monrovia Wednesday, December 24, 2025, Freeman claimed that the Boakia's Administration lacks focus and direction, stating that its agenda has not revived the livelihoods of the ordinary citizens.

“Two years in, and the administration still lacks a clear direction. Every policy, every action seems made on the fly. That is a recipe for failure,” Freeman stated.

When asked about his honest grading on the government performance nearly two years in office, Freeman declared a demeaning 20/100 percent.

He cited stalled job creation, rising economic pressures on households, and underperforming public services as evidence of a government out of touch with citizen needs.

“How can businesses thrive, and how can young people find opportunities when there’s no structured plan for economic growth or industrial development?” he asked.

The MPC leader also criticized ongoing political infighting and unfulfilled promises, warning that these distractions have undermined governance and stalled national development.

Freeman stressed that they lack coordination and strategic depth, limiting their overall impact. “It’s firefighting instead of nation-building,” he said.

The MPC Political Leader however emphasized that his 20/100 rating reflects systemic leadership weaknesses rather than symbolic judgment.

According to him, the administration entered office with strong public support and high expectations, particularly from young Liberians and working-class citizens, who hoped for decisive action and structural reform.

“People were expecting real change, not rhetoric,” he noted. “This administration has been reactive rather than proactive, and that is dangerous for the country.”

CAPITOL HILL, MONROVIA: Despite growing public interest in how the deal reshapes Liberia’s rail governance and long-term control of key infrastructure, the House of Representatives of Liberia’s bicameral Legislature has ratified the Concession and Access Agreement (CAA) between the Government of Liberia, Société des Mines de Fer de Guinée (SMFG), and Ivanhoe Liberia Ltd.

The agreement was endorsed during the 17th Day Sitting of the 3rd Quarter of the 2nd Session on Thursday, December 11, 2025.

The passage follows submission of an extensive report from the Joint Committee on Investment & Concessions, Judiciary, Ways & Means, and Good Governance.

The Committee had been mandated to review all provisions of the July 5, 2025, CAA and conduct hearings with the Inter-Ministerial Concessions Committee (IMCC).

According to the Committee’s report, the Government of Liberia initially granted SMFG and Ivanhoe a conditional Right of Access in August 2021, allowing export of Guinean iron ore through Liberia’s rail corridor and the Port of Buchanan.

Following negotiations, the IMCC and SMFG/Ivanhoe finalized the CAA, which was attested to by the Ministry of Justice and approved by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai before being submitted for legislative action.

Under the agreement, SMFG and Ivanhoe Liberia receive a 25-year right-of-way to transport iron ore from Guinea using Liberia’s railway and port infrastructure. The concessionaires (SMFG and Ivanhoe Liberia) are obligated to upgrade the rail system and modernize the Buchanan port to meet multi-user, safety, and capacity standards.

The agreement presents Liberia as a transit hub for industrial goods destined for Guinea and outlines several financial obligations, which include the government revenue of 1.5% customs user fee on CIF-based imports, US$500,000 annual customs transit fee, Direct Payments by Concessionaires, and $1M within 10 business days of signing.

The agreement also presents Liberia with US$10M after the Effective Date, US$15M at the Commencement Date, US$2.33M upon enactment of the National Rail Authority Act, US$3.33M at appointment of the Independent Operator, and US$3.33M on the first anniversary of appointment.

Additional charges include Rail Access Fee: US$1.55–US$1.95 per ton (inflation-indexed), Cross-Border Transit Fee: US$0.10 per wet ton, and a previously advanced US$37 million remains non-refundable unless Liberia denies access.

Ivanhoe Atlantic has already submitted its Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) to the EPA, following consultations with communities along the rail corridor.

This transition is one of the most scrutinized aspects of the deal, as it sets a precedent for shared rail usage among future mining companies.

Following the debate, a motion by Montserrado County District #2 Representative Sekou Kanneh was adopted, passing the agreement and forwarding it to the Liberian Senate for concurrence.

CAPITOL HILL, LIBERIA: The former Executive Director of the Public Procurement and Concessions Commission (PPCC), Mr. Dorbor Jallah, on Thursday, November 11, 2025, delivered a detailed clarification on Liberia’s 2018 procurement processes.

Dorbor Jallah firmly distanced himself and the PPCC from any concession-related approvals linked to the controversial Telecom International Alliance (TIA) agreement.

Jallah appeared before the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Post & Telecommunications, Investment & Concession, and Judiciary during its third public hearing on the proposed de-ratification of the TIA agreement with the Government of Liberia.

The session was presided over by Representative Ivar K. Jones of Margibi County.

In his testimony, the PPCC's former boss explained that the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) submitted a procurement plan in 2018 that received only provisional approval.

This temporary clearance, Jallah stressed, authorized the LTA to begin standard procurement activities—not concession negotiations or contract awards.

He explained that any procurement above the legal financial threshold requires a PPCC “No Objection” before award, adding that the 2018 provisional approval did not confer authority for awarding a contract.

“The LTA’s submission was strictly for traditional procurement,” Jallah stated. “It did not include, and was never intended to include, any concession-related activities. Concessions Follow an Entirely Different Legal Path”

Jallah painstakingly outlined Liberia’s required legal framework for processing concessions—one he says was never triggered for the TIA deal.

He named a Certificate of Concession issued by the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) verifying that the proposed concession aligns with the national development agenda; a Concession Procurement Plan developed by the requesting entity and reviewed and approved by the PPCC; formation of an Inter-Ministerial Concessions Committee (IMCC) by the President to supervise the concession process under the National Investment Commission (NIC) as basic requirement.

He clarified that none of these steps took place for any gateway monitoring or TIA-related arrangement during his tenure.

In one of the most consequential statements of the hearing, Jallah told lawmakers that he has no recollection of ever granting concession approval for any gateway monitoring service, and those recent checks of his personal files show no concession procurement plan from the LTA, no approval from the PPCC, and no documentation linked to TIA under concession procedures.

“There is simply no record—because no concession approval of that nature was ever granted,” he insisted.

Following Jallah’s testimony, the Joint Committee entered executive deliberations in its Committee Room. The committee is expected to compile its findings and submit a formal report to the House Plenary, which will determine the next course of legislative action regarding the controversial TIA agreement.

GRAND BASSA COUNTY: Representative Alfred H. Flomo of Grand Bassa County Electoral District#4 says Liberia can only achieve sustainable economic growth if the nation moves away from its dependence on the extractive industry and prioritizes a robust agriculture-driven economy.

Representative Flomo emphasized that despite Liberia’s vast natural resource wealth, the reliance on mining and other extractive ventures has not translated into significant livelihood improvements for ordinary citizens.

He pointed out that the agriculture sector has the potential to employ the highest portion of Liberia’s population, presenting the most realistic path to economic transformation.

“Liberia has fertile soil, favorable climate conditions, and hardworking citizens who are ready to farm. What we lack is the needed investment and proper system to ensure agriculture pays off,” he said.

Speaking on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, the lawmaker stressed the importance of empowering smallholder farmers, describing them as key actors in the national food production chain.

He noted that smallholder farmers continue to face unnecessary barriers such as limited market access, poor road networks, a lack of modern farming tools, and difficulty accessing financing.

Representative Flomo expressed concern over the implementation of the Rural Economic Transformation Project (RETRAP) under the Ministry of Agriculture, claiming it has not delivered meaningful results on the ground.

According to the Bassa Lawmaker, a significant portion of the project’s funds remains centralized at the administrative level rather than reaching the intended beneficiaries.

“If the farmers who grow our food cannot feel the impact of RETRAP, then we need to re-evaluate how these funds are being disbursed,” Representative Flomo intoned, urging the government and development partners to ensure greater transparency and accountability to maximize project results.

He also renewed calls for the re-establishment of the Agricultural Development Bank, which he believes would play a critical role in providing affordable loans to farmers and agribusinesses.

Representative Flomo stated that strengthening agricultural financing is essential for boosting production, enhancing value addition, and increasing exports.

He maintained that with the right investments in technology, training, and rural infrastructure, the agriculture sector has the potential to become a major source of employment for Liberian youth, reduce food imports, and contribute significantly to national revenue generation.

Representative Flomo concluded by urging policymakers to prioritize agriculture in national planning, noting that sustainable economic growth can only be achieved when Liberians are empowered to produce what they eat and export what they grow.

Paynesville, Liberia: A tragic incident has hit the Gobychop Field community in Paynesville, where two young children died after being electrocuted by an illegal power connection. The heartbreaking event has left residents in shock and anger, renewing concerns about unsafe electrical wiring in the area.

Eyewitnesses say the children names withheld out of respect were playing near a house when they touched an exposed live wire. The wire, believed to be part of an illegal electricity hookup from a nearby structure, delivered a deadly shock that killed them instantly.

Residents described scenes of panic as people rushed to help, only to realize the children could not be saved. Many called it one of the community’s saddest moments.

The incident highlights the continued dangers of illegal power connections, a problem affecting many parts of Liberia. Despite warnings from the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), some homes still rely on unsafe wiring due to high costs, limited access, or unreliable supply.

Following the tragedy, community members are demanding quick action. They want stricter enforcement, safer electrification, and accountability for those responsible for the dangerous setup.

“This didn’t have to happen,” one resident said tearfully. “We can’t keep losing our children because of illegal connections. Someone must answer.”

The Liberia National Police (LNP) has launched an investigation to trace the source of the illegal power line and identify those who may face charges.

Local leaders and civil society groups are also urging the government and LEC to expand safety awareness campaigns, especially in crowded communities where illegal connections are common.

As Gobychop Field mourns, residents hope this tragedy will push authorities to improve safety measures and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Lawmakers announced that all SOE heads must appear before the full Plenary next Tuesday, December 2, 2025, warning that persistent absence is obstructing the legislative budget review process.

State-Owned Enterprises operate across key sectors—including energy, transportation, ports, and telecommunications—and are expected to provide critical financial data to support national revenue forecasting.

Legislators, however, expressed frustration that multiple invitations to these entities have gone unanswered, a move lawmakers fear could delay passage of the Fiscal Year 2026 National Budget and contribute to potential revenue gaps.

Plenary noted that all SOEs are legally mandated under the Public Financial Management (PFM) and Budget Laws to comply with legislative budget scrutiny. Their absence, lawmakers stressed, is not only “unacceptable” but also a direct challenge to the Legislature's authority.

In a heightened response, the House has instructed SOE executives to appear with their legal counsels to explain why they should not be held in contempt for actions deemed obstructive to the national budget process.

In a related development, the House has also summoned Justice Minister Oswald Tweh following reports that his office allegedly instructed a halt to the Liberia Revenue Authority’s (LRA) legal powers. These powers enable the LRA to enforce tax compliance—an essential source of revenue for the government.

Lawmakers are demanding a full legal explanation for what they have described as “potential interference with revenue enforcement.”

Similarly, the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) has been asked to appear and clarify the situation, particularly how the suspension may affect revenue projections in the Fiscal Year 2026 budget.

Despite the growing tensions, the House of Representatives reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a transparent, accountable, and timely budget process that prioritizes the interests of the Liberian people.

Legislators emphasized that no institution, public or private, is exempt from oversight during the formulation of the national budget, and all entities must respect the rule of law and the constitutional mandate of the Legislature.

The decision was reached following the presentation of an extensive report from the Joint Committee on Education and Public Administration, Judiciary, Banking and Finance, and Ways, Means and Finance. The Committee had been mandated to thoroughly scrutinize the financing agreement submitted by the Executive Branch.

During deliberations, committee members raised critical concerns, underscoring that the IDA support is not a grant, but a loan that will become part of Liberia’s long-term debt portfolio. They stressed that such commitments must undergo rigorous review, with one member noting that legislative approval “cannot be automatic it must be earned and justified.”

According to the Joint Committee’s findings, the Liberia EXCEL Project aims to significantly strengthen foundational learning outcomes across 2,337 public schools spanning all 15 counties. The program will target early childhood and primary education, two areas consistently identified as the most vulnerable segments of Liberia’s education system.

The ratified US$60 million credit is structured to unlock an additional US$28.7 million grant from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE). Combined, the project will benefit from a total financing package of US$88.7 million—a boost lawmakers say is crucial for rebuilding the country’s human capital foundation.

With the House’s unanimous ratification, the legislative instrument has now been forwarded to the Liberian Senate for concurrence. If approved, implementation of the EXCEL Project will begin with a nationwide effort to elevate teaching standards, enhance school environments, and introduce targeted interventions to support early learners.

During its 11th day sitting of the 3rd Quarter of the 2nd Session on Thursday, November 20, 2025, the Plenary mandated three key committees—Investment and Concession, Post and Telecommunication, and Judiciary—to thoroughly review the President’s communication and report back within two weeks.

In his communication to the Legislature, President Boakai disclosed that the Executive Branch had already suspended the TIA–LTA Concession Agreement for Telecommunication Traffic Monitoring Services.

The suspension, President Boakai said, followed damning revelations from three investigative bodies including the General Auditing Commission (GAC), the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), and the Board of Commissioners of the LTA.

These investigations uncovered a pattern of statutory breaches, procurement irregularities, and fraudulent activities that invalidated the contract from its inception.

According to the findings referenced by the President, the agreement was fraught with critical irregularities such as breach of procurement Law. The investigation found that that contract was awarded in clear violation of the Public Procurement and Concession Commission (PPCC) Act of 2010.

The investigation also established that the process bypassed legal processes and that the required procurement steps were entirely ignored.

Unexplained revenue share increase where TIA’s revenue share was raised from its initial 35% bid to 49%, with no justification provided.

A Dubious 20-Year Extension in the contract’s duration was extended by an additional 20 years without proof of value for money or national benefit was also found to be accordance with best practice.

Lepolu Torlon, National Chairman of the Association during Thursday’s sitting— the 11th day meeting of the 3rd Quarter of the 2nd Session—and was read into the record by Deputy Chief Clerk Beyan Sali.

In the petition dated November 11, 2025, the Association argues that the Sande Society remains a pillar of Liberian cultural identity, especially among communities where its teachings have shaped social values for generations.

Abolishing the Sande Society, the petitioner argues, would contradict this constitutional directive and erase an institution they consider foundational to traditional life.

Kwagrue.

The referral comes at a crucial time, as national budget hearings are currently ongoing.

The decision came after Nimba County Electoral District #2 Representative Nyan G. Flomo alarmed over what he termed an urgent national concern over alleged attempts to remove long-standing residents from homes and parcels of land claimed by the Ministry to be part of the Sanniquellie Military Barracks.

In his communication to Plenary, Representative Flomo detailed disturbing reports suggesting that Defense authorities are asserting ownership over the disputed lands without properly engaging affected families or presenting proof of ownership as required by Liberian law.

He emphasized that while the Land Rights Act of 2018 recognizes the State’s authority over certain public lands, the law also clearly spells out the procedures for land recovery, boundary verification, and eviction procedures that must be backed by valid deeds, survey maps, or other authenticated instruments.

“Any entity, including the government, must substantiate ownership of land with verifiable documentary evidence,” Representative Flomo said, warning that “unverified eviction attempts could trigger fear, tension, and hardship among residents, many of whom have also claim legitimate ownership of the same lands.”

Representative Flomo informed Plenary that earlier efforts by his office to engage the Ministry of National Defense had been unsuccessful, leaving affected residents increasingly anxious as rumors of possible eviction intensify.

He called for immediate legislative intervention to ensure transparency and prevent what he described as potentially unlawful displacement.

The House’s Committees is expected to scrutinize evidence of Ownership. In this light the Ministry must present all deeds, maps, surveys, and legal documents proving that the land in question is government property, and a clear boundary demarcation to show the extent of the Sanniquellie Military Barracks.

The Committees will request a detailed report addressing whether or not a court-ordered eviction has been initiated; the statutory basis for the action under the Land Rights Act or other laws, and notification procedures, grievance mechanisms, and measures to ensure fair treatment of affected families.

For nearly 40 years, residents have battled recurring transportation interruptions, seasonal isolation, and fatal accidents due to the absence of a durable bridge.

Speaker Nagbe fulfilled this directive shortly after the vote.

Marvin Cole, who criticized the Ministry’s stop-order, arguing that it threatened to derail progress and undermine the work already undertaken by local citizens.

Marvin Cole of Bong County Electoral District #3 triggered debate by filing a motion for widespread public engagement.

Before we take any action, Liberians across the country must be consulted to express their concerns, fears, and expectations.”

<media:keywords>Gov’t presents US$1.3m Jor River bridge plan; CMC backs off, accuses Public Works of inflating costs</media:keywords>

Monrovia, Liberia: A major dispute has erupted over the construction of the Jor River Bridge in Bong County after the Ministry of Public Works presented a US$1.3 million engineering design, a figure that immediately forced the Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) to abandon its own bridge initiative and accuse the government of inflating costs.

The presentation was made during a tense legislative session where Public Works Minister Roland Lafayette Giddings outlined the ministry’s plan. According to him, the government’s design is based on full technical studies—soil tests, river flow assessments, engineering drawings, material calculations, and environmental requirements.

Giddings argued that the government’s cost reflects the demands of a modern, long-lasting bridge.

“We cannot approve any bridge unless it meets national engineering standards,” he told lawmakers. He emphasized that the ministry had already conducted studies months before CMC introduced its cheaper US$450,000 alternative.

CMC Political Leader Musa Hassan Bility reacted sharply. He told reporters that the government’s price tag is exaggerated and does not reflect conditions on the ground.

“CMC will step back and let the government take full responsibility,” he said, adding that all equipment and materials previously mobilized for the project will be removed.

Bility insisted the CMC design was based on bridges the party has already completed in Nimba, Margibi, and Grand Bassa and argued that the ministry’s assessment was “nowhere close” to their own findings.

He also accused House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon of blocking lawmakers from questioning the ministry’s figures, saying the process lacked transparency.

The Jor River crossing is considered one of the county’s most dangerous points. Every rainy season, commuters traveling between Totota, Gbarnga, Ganta, and nearby towns face accidents, destruction of crops, and long delays.

Bong County Superintendent Hawa Loleyah Norris backed the ministry’s insistence on a properly engineered bridge, saying community-built structures with substandard designs could pose risks.

But District #3 Representative Marvin Cole, who supported the CMC initiative, fears the government’s move could delay relief for thousands of residents.

Public Works: “No Politics Just Safety”

Minister Giddings held firm, saying the ministry is not trying to undermine any political group. Instead, he said the law requires all road and bridge projects whether funded by government, communities, or political organizations to be vetted and supervised by Public Works.

“We cannot permit construction that does not meet structural and environmental standards,” he said.

The government’s US$1.3 million proposal will now move toward contractor selection through the procurement process.

Bility Fires Back: Claims Gov’t Wants To Insert Inflated Cost in Budget

After the session, Bility escalated his allegations, accusing the minister and House leadership of pushing out CMC so the government could later insert an inflated figure in the national budget.

He said the project does not appear in the current or upcoming budgets, despite the minister’s claims.

“This is designed to give the government room to add US$1.3 million later with no accountability,” Bility argued.

CMC says it will redirect its resources to other communities instead of continuing at Jor River.

The dispute has also reopened old hostilities between Bility and Bong County Senator Prince K. Moye. Although Moye recently asked the ministry to work with CMC, he had previously accused Bility of misappropriating funds from the China Union mining agreement a charge he has never proven.

Bility dismissed the allegations again, saying his finances are legitimate and open to scrutiny.
