UN Top Official for Sahel Pays Acquaintance Visits to GAC

Monrovia, Liberia – An official from the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel based in Dakar, Senegal, on Thursday, September 29, 2022 paid a courtesy call on the Auditor General of Liberia – P.Garswa Jackson, Sr, at his Ashmun Street Office, Monrovia.

Madam Israra Hamad, head of the Liberian Desk Office at the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel informed Auditor General Jackson and his top management team that her visit to the General Auditing Commission (GAC) was intended to understand the GAC and its mandate.

During the meeting, Madam Hamad noted that she has come to the country to interact with key national stakeholders to understand Liberia.

She expressed the hope that her interactions would benefit the stakeholders in Liberia and her office.

In response, the Auditor General welcomed the U.N Liberia Desk Officer to the GAC.

He provided an overview of the mandate of the General Auditing Commission as Liberia’s External Auditor.

He further indicated to Madam Hamad that GAC’s primary mandate is to audit all public funds including Liberia’s development partners assistance to Liberia, and the consolidated accounts of the Government of Liberia.

The AG further explained that upon completion of audits, the reports are submitted to the National Legislature through the Joint Public Accounts, Audit and Expenditure Committee (PAC) with copies send to the President of the Republic of Liberia and partners.

The Auditor General indicated that as a demonstration of accountability and transparency the GAC has undergone audits of its books and accounts first, by the Kenyan National Audit Office and second, by the Sierra Leone National Audit Office.

Continuing, the Liberia Auditor General explained that the GAC recently underwent peer review conducted by the African Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions English Speaking Countries (AFROSAL-E).

AFROSAI-E is an umbrella organization of English- speaking countries in Africa Government audit offices.

Concluding, AG Jackson intimated that since his ascendency to the position of Auditor General, he has expanded audit courage, operationalized the Unit responsible to follow up on audit report recommendations, and enhanced the collaboration between the GAC and other anti-graft institutions in the fight against corruption.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Auditors General Hon.Foday G.Kiazolu, Hon. Winsley S. Nanka and others.
