Big Boost: Finally, HOR Enacts Bill to Establish Paynesville Community College

By: William K. Howard

Capitol Hill: In an effort to deliver as per his mandate; Lawmaking, Representation and Oversight, the Honorable House of Representatives (HOR) under the leadership of Counselor J. Fonati Koffa as Speaker have unanimously enacted a bill for the establishment of the Paynesville Community College (PVCC).

The bill that was overwhelmingly passed by a unique number of parliamentarians during the 9th day sitting of the 2nd quarter of the first session of the 55th legislature, seeks to provide affordable and accessible higher educational opportunities to the residents of Paynesville and surrounding area.

In a communication addressed to the plenary of the House of Representatives during the first quarter, the proponent, Montserrado County district #4 lawmaker and head of the house’s committee on Judiciary noted deliberated that Paynesville as a host city of thousands of Liberians from all over the country has approximately a million inhabitants, many of whom travel as far as Fendell and other distances to attend university and college, and by that, it is time that the country largest city (Paynesville) establishes a community college that will ease their burden.

Plenary took the decision on Thursday (June 13, 2024) during its 9th day sitting up Capitol Hill.

The proposed act was sponsored by Hon. Michael M. Thomas representative District#4 Montserrado County and the chair on Judiciary.

Representative Thomas, who has been a faithful advocate for educational reform across the country, emphasized the importance of creating a community college that will cater to the needs of the local population. He is hopeful that the establishment of the Paynesville Community College (PVCC) will not only increase access to higher education but also contribute to the overall development and progress of the city and neighboring community residents who are in search of quality, accessible and affordable tertiary education.

Meanwhile, the bill has been forwarded to the Liberian senate for concurrence.
