Lone Star Women Gear Up for WAFU Women's Cup Opener in Mauritania

Nouakchott, Mauritania: Liberia's Women National Football Team, the Lone Star, have embarked on an intensive preparation ahead of their kick-off match on Thursday, May 22nd, against Guinea-Bissau in the 2025 West African Football Union (WAFU-A) Women's Cup.

A 21-player squad of the Lone Star was captured on Wednesday, May 21st, in an intensive pre-match training, a move to set the pace for their Thursday showdown in Group A against their West African counterparts, Guinea-Bissau, in Mauritania.

Liberia will kick off its journey for the championship hoping for a win to begin the competition on an impressive note. The Lone Star Women are drawn in Group A against Guinea-Bissau, Mali, and host Mauritania.

The 2025 WAFU-A Women's Cup which is featuring eight West African countries, Group B, holds Guinea, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and the defending champions, Senegal.

Liberia Women National Team Coach Selam Kebede is set to lead the team in the competition from May 22 to 31, 2025, and will be striving to produce her first major title for the Women's National Team since taking over in 2023.

Liberia will face each group member in a one-leg tie and will need to occupy one of the two top spots in the zone to make it to the semi-finals in the tournament.

The last time the Lone Star Women participated in the WAFU Zone-A Women's Cup was in 2020 in Sierra Leone, where the team emerged in third place.
