Liberia Set to Host the FIBA Africa Zone 3 Under-16 Basketball Championship

Monrovia, Liberia: Liberia is poised to serve as the host country for the 2025 Federation of International Basketball Association's (FIBA) Afrobasket Zone 3 Under-16 Championship.

The tournament is scheduled to begin on July 10 to 17, 2025.

The championship showdown will feature both male and female Under 16 national basketball teams from five West African countries, competing in a round-robin format at the SKD Basketball gymnasium in Paynesville City.

According to an official release from FIBA, participating nations in the upcoming sub-regional tournament include host Liberia, Benin, Burkina Faso, Togo, and Ivory Coast.

The tournament will serve as a qualifier for the FIBA continental Under 16 AfroBasket finals, which will take place in Kigali, Rwanda, from September 2 to 14, 2025.

The top-performing teams from Zone 3, following the tense qualifiers, will advance to represent the sub-region on the continental stage.

The FIBA-Africa U16 qualifiers aim to provide a platform for emerging basketball talents across Africa to showcase their skills internationally and gain valuable experience in high-level competition.

The upcoming tournament marks the second international basketball event to be hosted in Liberia since FIBA lifted its suspension on the Liberia Basketball Association (LBA) some years ago.

With the reemergence of Liberia’s National Basketball team and increased participation of local league clubs in international competitions, Liberia’s basketball scene appears to be regaining momentum for its rhythm after nearly a decade of dormancy on the international stage.
