Nimba County Senatorial By-Election Ends Peacefully

Nimba County, Liberia: The people of Nimba  County witnessed a peaceful and incident-free senatorial by-election today, held to fill the vacant seat in the Liberian Senate following the passing of the late Senator Prince Yormie Johnson.

Polling stations across the county opened promptly at 8:00 a.m. and have since closed. Although final voter turnout figures are not yet confirmed, the National Elections Commission (NEC) revealed that 37,254 citizens were registered to vote in this critical by-election. The actual number of participants will be verified in the coming days as the vote tallying and verification process unfolds.

In a press briefing this evening, NEC officials expressed gratitude to the citizens of Neighbor County for turning out peacefully and responsibly to elect a candidate of their choice. “We are pleased to announce that the senatorial by-election has ended peacefully, with no reported incidents of violence or disruptions throughout the county,” the NEC statement read.

The Commission also confirmed that, as of the time of the briefing, its legal department had received no formal complaints regarding the conduct of the election. This is seen as a significant indicator of transparency and public confidence in the electoral process.

NEC extended special appreciation to the Liberia National Police and other security agencies for ensuring a calm and secure voting environment. Recognition was also given to the Government of Liberia for allocating the necessary funding and to the international donor community for their consistent support of Liberia’s democratic processes.

We also want to thank the Liberian media, particularly community radio stations across Neighbor County, for their coverage and commitment to keeping the public informed throughout this exercise,” the NEC added.

The Commission announced that vote tallying will commence tomorrow, Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at two magisterial offices located in Sanniquellie and Tappita. In this regard, NEC has extended an open invitation to all stakeholders — including local and international observers, political parties, and members of the press — to witness the transparent counting process.

“As we move forward, the NEC remains committed to working with all electoral actors to ensure the successful conclusion of this senatorial by-election,” NEC Boss Lansanah
