At Least 24 Dead in Central Texas Flooding, Dozens Still Missing

At least 24 people have died after torrential rain triggered catastrophic flash flooding across central Texas early Friday, CNN reports, citing state officials.
Search and Rescue Underway:
More than 20 girls remain unaccounted for at Camp Mystic in Kerr County. The camp is located along a river that surged over 20 feet in under two hours. Officials stressed that the girls are not necessarily lost, but rescue efforts are ongoing.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said search operations will continue “in the darkness of night.” So far, about 237 people have been rescued or evacuated many airlifted by helicopters.
Record-Breaking Rainfall:
Parts of central Texas were inundated with a month’s worth of rain in just a few hours. The town of Hunt, near Kerrville, saw 6.5 inches of rainfall in just three hours event meteorologists describe as a “once-in-100-years” occurrence. More heavy rain is expected Saturday.
