USA-LIBERIA: In a groundbreaking achievement that marks a defining chapter in Liberia’s sporting history, Thomas Sorber, a Liberian-American basketball prodigy, was selected 15th overall by the reigning National Basketball Association (NBA) champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, during the 2025 NBA Draft held on the night of Wednesday, June 25, 2025 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Sorber, born to Liberian parents in Trenton, New Jersey, entered the draft after an impressive freshman season at Georgetown University, where he averaged 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game.

His strong post presence, shot-blocking ability, and rebounding made him one of the most coveted big men in this year’s draft class.

Despite undergoing foot surgery that sidelined him late in the college season, Sorber’s pre-draft workouts restored confidence among league executives. Oklahoma City, fresh off its 2025 NBA Championship win, selected him as a strategic addition to its rotation, aiming to strengthen its interior defense and rebounding depth.

The Thunder’s front office has described Sorber as NBA-ready, citing his mature physical build, defensive instincts, and capacity to contribute to a competitive roster. He is expected to join the team in Las Vegas for the NBA Summer League as he begins his professional development.

With his selection, Sorber became one of the few players of Liberian heritage to be drafted into the NBA and the highest-profile Liberian prospect to date.

The pick was announced by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver during the first round of the televised draft event. Sorber appeared on stage shortly after, donning the Thunder cap and team colors, solidifying his entry into the league and initiating his rookie contract process.

Oklahoma City’s decision to draft Sorber adds to a core of young, versatile talent and reinforces the franchise’s focus on long-term player development. His presence is expected to enhance the team’s interior depth alongside established players and fellow recent draft picks.

Sorber’s next major appearance will be in the NBA Summer League, where he will compete against other rookies and young talents from across the league, providing an early look at how he may be utilized within the Thunder’s system.

The 2025 NBA Draft selection of Thomas Sorber by the Oklahoma City Thunder formally establishes the young center as a professional athlete at the highest level of basketball and introduces Liberia to the NBA with a first-round presence.
