Female Lone Star Secured Win in WAFU Women's Cup Opening Fixture with Stunning Comeback against Guinea-Bissau

Nouakchott, Mauritania: Liberia's female national football team, affectionately called the Lone Star, kicked off the 2025 West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone-A Women's Cup on an impressive note, securing a 3-1 win against Guinea-Bissau in the tournament's opener.
The Lone Star Women went down 1-0 to Guinea-Bissau in the 16th minute at the Stade Ksar Stadium in Mauritania but overturned the one-goal deficit with a thrilling 3-goal comeback in full-time in the opening fixture on Thursday, May 22, 2025.
Thanks to a goal from Jessica Quachie that leveled the scoreline, before a brace from Liberia's USA-based player Mimi Eiden that sealed the crucial 3 points for the female Lone Star in Group A of the tournament.
The result now put Liberia in second place in Group A, tied on 3 points with the group leader, Mali.
Coach Selam Kebede's side will now be in search of a win in their next two group-stage games to guarantee a spot in the semi-finals.
Liberia is drawn in Group A against Guinea-Bissau, Mali, and host Mauritania. The tournament in Group B features Guinea, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and defending champions Senegal.
The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals. The tournament is taking place in Mauritania from May 18 to 31, 2025.
The Red, White, and Blue ladies will take on host Mauritania in their second group stage encounter on Saturday, May 24, 2025, hoping for another 3 points to secure a qualifier spot in the group stage.
Coach Head, Selam Kebede, is on a mission to produce her first major title for the Lone Star Women since taking charge in 2023.
