"No Woman Should Have to Endure This": The Gender Ministry Responds to a Shocking Rape Case

MONROVIA, LIBERIA: The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has expressed deep alarm and condemnation over a disturbing case of sexual violence involving a 31-year-old woman in Mount Barclay Community of Paynesville City, Montserrado County.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Thursday, June 26, 2025, when armed intruders broke into the woman’s home around 4:00 a.m.
According to the survivor, the assailants threatened her at knifepoint before one of them subjected her to a horrific act of rape. Despite the traumatic experience, she courageously reported the crime and sought immediate assistance.
The Ministry commends her bravery and swift response, which demonstrates strength in the face of terror.
MoGCSP reiterates its firm stance against all forms of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and pledges its ongoing commitment to supporting survivors and ensuring that justice is served, urging the public to remain alert and to promptly report all acts of abuse or violence to the relevant authorities.
In response to the incident, the Ministry facilitated emergency care for the survivor through the JDJ One-Stop Center, where she is currently receiving medical care, psychosocial counseling, and other essential support. The victim has since been relocated to a secure environment to aid in her recovery.
In collaboration with the Liberia National Police and other partners, investigations are actively ongoing. Authorities have confirmed that two individuals, the security guard assigned to the residence and a male relative of the victim’s spouse, are currently under investigation as persons of interest. Their roles in the incident are being thoroughly examined by investigators.
The Ministry views the circumstances of this attack as highly troubling and underscores the urgent need for greater vigilance and community education.
To this end, outreach and awareness campaigns are being expanded throughout Montserrado and its surroundings. These initiatives aim to raise awareness about SGBV prevention, encourage early reporting, and empower communities to take action.
MoGCSP also calls on the Ministry of Justice to expedite the investigation and judicial processes, ensuring that those responsible for sexual violence are held accountable without unnecessary delay.
“No individual—woman, girl, or child—should have to endure such brutal violations,” the Ministry emphasized in a call to action.
The ministry urges leaders of faith-based organizations, political figures, community leadership, civil society, and sports organizations to speak out and engage their networks in promoting a culture of protection and zero tolerance for abuse.
Now more than ever, collective effort is vital, and the ministry encourages all sectors of society to stand in solidarity with survivors, advocate against violence, and work together to build safer communities across Liberia.
