Onana Uncertain as Manchester United Eyes Emiliano Martinez in Shock Goalkeeper Move

England: Manchester United’s goalkeeping department could be in for a major overhaul as the club reportedly sets its sights on Aston Villa and Argentina star Emiliano Martinez, raising fresh doubts about the future of current number one Andre Onana.

Onana, who joined United from Inter Milan in 2023, has now spent two rollercoaster seasons at Old Trafford marked by inconsistency and costly mistakes. Despite flashes of brilliance, the Cameroonian has struggled to convince fans and critics that he is the long-term answer between the sticks.

Now, his latest comments are only fueling speculation. Speaking to Afrik-Foot during an event in Burkina Faso, Onana gave a vague response when asked about his future: “Will I leave? I don't know, we'll see!”—a remark that has done little to silence the growing rumors.

At the same time, fresh reports from Argentina suggest that Emiliano Martinez is open to a move to Old Trafford. The World Cup winner, 32, is believed to be intrigued by the prospect of joining United, even if it means sacrificing Champions League football in the short term.

While on international duty, Martinez downplayed the speculation but did not shut the door. “The transfer window just opened, so there's still a long way to go,” he said—an indication that discussions may still be underway behind the scenes.

According to Bolavip, Manchester United is considered the "main option" for Martinez this summer. Galatasaray has reportedly made an approach, but the Argentine is said to be holding out for a Premier League club—and specifically, a call from Old Trafford.

United, however, appear to be biding their time as they weigh their options and potentially seek suitors for Onana before moving aggressively for Martinez. Sources suggest the club is “interested but hesitant” until the Onana situation is resolved.

Martinez’s former goalkeeping coach, Neil Cutler, is confident that the shot-stopper is ready for a big step up. “He has everything needed to succeed at a club like United,” Cutler told The Sun, noting Martinez’s leadership, mentality, and world-class reflexes.

Cutler added that Martinez isn’t driven by money and still wants to compete at the highest level in Europe. A move to Saudi Arabia has reportedly been ruled out, as the keeper sees his next club as a platform to cement his legacy—not simply collect a paycheck.

As United plan another rebuild under uncertainty, the battle for the No.1 shirt could define the club’s defensive identity next season. The question is simple: will United continue backing Onana for a third campaign—or make a bold statement by bringing in a World Cup winner ready to command the spotlight?
