“Comedy Was Never My Plan, I Used It to Escape Poverty in Liberia”Mama LBR
Monrovia, Liberia: Popular Liberian skit maker and comedian Abass Conde, known as Mama Liberia, has revealed that becoming a comedian was never part of his dream. In a recent live video on his Facebook page, Mama Liberia said he turned to comedy because of the tough conditions in Liberia, not because it was his first choice.
“I studied nursing but couldn’t find a job,” he explained. “I was hungry and had no help. So I used what I had comedy to survive.”
Dressed as an old Liberian woman in his skits, Mama Liberia has faced criticism, including being labeled as gay. But he said he doesn’t blame anyone for that.
“Before God started blessing me through this wig and old woman’s clothes, nobody called me gay. But now that I’m making it, people have a problem,” he said.
Abass, who graduated high school in 2017 and earned a certificate in nurse aide training in 2021, started comedy in that same year. His natural humor stood out among his friends, and soon, he began creating skits that quickly gained attention.
Since then, Mama Liberia has worked with several top Liberian comedians, including
• Kortor Barry
• Paul Flomo
• Ma Kaka Son
• Comedian Gepotee
• EKJ The Comedian
He also became one of the winners of the BBL Season 2 Reality Show Kickoff Challenge.
Now a respected content creator, Mama Liberia has signed multiple brand ambassador deals and continues to use comedy not just to entertain, but to rise out of poverty and inspire others.
Even though some people criticize him, Mama Liberia is now one of Liberia’s top comedians. After studying nursing and not finding a job, he turned to comedy and became well known across the country.
His story shows how someone can turn a tough life into something good.
Today, he uses his jokes to make people laugh and to encourage young Liberians to keep chasing their dreams, no matter what.
What Mama Liberia’s Story Really Means for Liberia
Mama Liberia’s journey is more than just about becoming a comedian. It shows the real struggles and strength of young people in Liberia.
No Jobs for Talented Youth: Even though Mama Liberia studied nursing, he couldn’t find a job. This is something many young people in Liberia face: they go to school, but there are no jobs. This means the country needs to do more to create opportunities for its youth.
Using Creativity to survive:when things got tough, Mama Liberia turned to comedy and social media to survive. Many young people are doing the same. It shows that Liberia has a lot of creative talent, but most of them are using it out of need, not choice.
Society Still Doesn’t Understand: Mama Liberia also faces criticism for acting like a woman in his skits. This shows that Liberians still struggle to accept people who do things differently. There’s still a need for more understanding, tolerance, and respect for creative freedom.
