Foreign Min Nyanti Pushes for UN Security Council Reform and Stronger Global Peace building

Monrovia,Liberia: Liberia’s Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti live on Bbc calls for reform of the UN Security Council to make it more equitable and representative.
Liberia recently won a non-permanent seat on the Council with 181 votes. Minister Nyanti highlighted Liberia’s transition from a peacekeeping recipient to a contributor and its experience with successful UN missions. She also pointed out the need for reform, including Africa’s permanent seat and revisiting veto powers.
“We believe that the Security Council should start looking at countries from that perspective – not only individually, but from the broader lens of preventing wars and conflict,” Minister Nyanti said.
Liberia’s history with post-conflict recovery and peacebuilding provides unique lessons, especially on youth reintegration and mental health. Minister Nyanti stresses the current Council structure is outdated and unfair, given it does not adequately represent the majority of the world’s population. Liberia aims to bring these perspectives to influence peacekeeping policies and promote regional cooperation.
“The vulnerability of our neighbors is our vulnerability too. The Security Council must begin to look at countries not just in isolation but as part of a regional fabric that needs to be strengthened to prevent future conflicts,” she concluded.
As Liberia joins the Security Council, it prioritizes peace, security, reform, and climate-related conflict, promising to be a strong voice for fairness and practical solutions in global peace efforts.
