Liberia Launches Local Campaign for UN Security Council Non-Permanent Member Post Today  

Monrovia, Liberia: The Government of Liberia will officially launch its local campaign for its bid for a non-permanent seat in the June 2025 election of the United Nations Security Council on Monday, February 10, 2025.

Reginald Goodridge, Co-Chair of LiberiaÂ’s campaign Steering Committee, disclosed that President Joseph Nyuma Boakai is expected to lead an array of top government officials to the Centennial Memorial Pavilion in Central Monrovia for the campaign's official launch.

The UN Security Council is composed of 15 Members, Five permanent members which include China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly.

The last time Liberia held a non-permanent set at the UN Security Council was in 1961 when, as oldest country on the continent Liberia accredited for its strong advocacy for African liberation and independence, and global peace and security as well.

Speaking with K-News during the weekend, Goodridge said the program marking the campaign launch is intended to sensitize Liberians about the potential benefits the country will attracts when elected to the prestigious positions on the United Nations Security Council.

According to Goodridge, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Liberia will be in a position to represent the interests of the African Continent on critical issues ranging from migration, climate change, gender equality, conflicts, humanitarian crises, and terrorism.

He indicated that Liberia will also benefit from global recognition that will increase the countryÂ’s prospect for direct foreign investments which in turn will improve the living conditions of Liberians.

Goodridge disclosed that the campaign launch program will gather together a cross-section of government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, civil society organizations, the religious and the studentsÂ’ communities, traditional leaders, and as well members of the private sector.
