Liberia Prepares for Impact of U.S. Deportations and USAID Program Cuts

Monrovia, Liberia: The Government of Liberia is concerned about the U.S. government’s decision to deport illegal immigrants and criminals and suspend USAID programs worldwide, including those in Liberia, which impact key areas such as health, agriculture, education, and the rule of law.

On Deportation:

While Liberia has not been officially notified about mass deportations, it is aware that four deportees will arrive this week. The deportation process started before the U.S. announcement.

Liberia’s Foreign Minister has written to the U.S. Secretary of State requesting a meeting to discuss alternatives to deportation. The Liberian government is also engaging with U.S. Congress members to find alternatives.

A virtual meeting was held with Liberians in the U.S., led by Liberia’s Ambassador to the U.S. and the Foreign Minister. It focused on coordinating responses to the deportation issue.

Liberia’s Foreign Ministry is working closely with the U.S. Ambassador in Monrovia to address this matter.

An Inter-Agency Task Force, led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been set up to prepare for possible mass deportations. It includes other ministries and key agencies like the Liberia Immigration Service and Liberia National Police.

On USAID’s Suspension:

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has directed relevant ministries to assess the impact of USAID’s funding loss in sectors like agriculture, education, and health and recommend solutions.

The Government of Liberia is committed to protecting the welfare of its citizens at home and abroad. It continues to engage with the United States to find solutions to the deportation and USAID suspension issues.

Liberia understands that the U.S. has the authority to make its policy decisions, but Liberia will continue to engage in dialogue and find the best possible approaches for its citizens.
