ArcelorMittal Liberia Strengthens Commitment to Sustainability with New Biodiversity Investment

Monrovia, Liberia: In a bold move to deepen its role in community development and environmental stewardship, ArcelorMittal Liberia has announced an investment of over US$58,000 in the latest phase of its Biodiversity and Conservation Program.
This initiative is geared toward transforming rural livelihoods while actively preserving the ecological balance of Liberia’s forestlands.
The program is being rolled out across nine fence line communities in the Yarmein Belt of Nimba County and is expected to directly benefit more than 60 local stakeholders.
By combining environmental conservation with sustainable agriculture, AML is demonstrating that industrial development can coexist with grassroots empowerment.
Implemented in partnership with Humanity Care Liberia, the initiative seeks to promote sustainable practices such as vegetable farming, piggery, poultry rearing, and swamp rice cultivation. These activities will reduce pressure on forests and also give rural farmers a stable means of livelihood, ultimately enhancing food security and self-sufficiency.
During the launch event in Baapa, community leaders joined AML officials in highlighting the dual mission of the program, which is to uplift local livelihoods while protecting the region’s natural biodiversity, and served as a platform to showcase how responsible corporate engagement can foster long-term community growth.
Samuel Peter, AML’s Superintendent for Biodiversity and Conservation, captured the spirit of the initiative, saying, “This program is not about AML profiting—it is about empowering farmers,” his assertion reflecting a growing ethos within AML that prioritizes people and the planet over short-term economic gain.
A core feature of the program is its community-centric model, where farmers will be provided with essential resources, including tools, seeds, and food support, to sustain them during the growing period.
Most notably, 100% of the harvests and income generated will remain with the local farmers, reinforcing ownership and ensuring every ounce of effort directly benefits the communities.
The success of the program also rests heavily on local leadership, with individuals like Marie Torlo, a key figure in the Yekepa vegetable gardeners, being acknowledged for their commitment and influence in mobilizing community participation, and their role underlines the power of grassroots leadership in driving lasting change.
AML’s Community Relations team was praised for their unwavering support in making the initiative possible. Their work in bridging the gap between corporate action and community needs continues to be central to the company’s sustainable development agenda.
This new phase of investment is part of AML’s broader vision to be a leader in responsible mining and corporate citizenship in Liberia. By choosing to invest in people and nature, the company is reinforcing its belief that true progress lies in inclusivity, resilience, and sustainability.
As the program unfolds across Yarmein, its impact will be measured not just in yields and income but in renewed hope, environmental restoration, and the rising confidence of rural farmers. ArcelorMittal Liberia is proving that when purpose meets partnership, transformation is inevitable.
