55th Legislature Concurs on the Passage of the National Food Assistance Agency Act

Monrovia, Liberia: The 55th Legislature of Liberia’s first Branch of Government has concurred on the passage of an Act of Legislature for the creation of the National Food Assistance Agency (NFAA) with an autonomous status. The Act also seeks to improve the management of food accessibility.
The Plenary of the House of Representatives, which concurred with the Liberia’s Senate on the passage, noted that the decision was predicated on recommendations contained in a report from the Committee on Judiciary headed by Representative Michael Thomas of Montserrado County Electoral District #4 during its Third Day Sitting of the Second Quarter of the Second Session of the 55th Legislature.
Representative Thomas, Chairman on Judiciary, asserted that the passage of the Act Establishing the NFAA will ensure food security, poverty reduction, good health, and sustainable agriculture.
“Members of the House, the Government's intentions to sustainably utilize food resources and recognize that the NFAA can execute its mandate as it's enshrined in this Act; to serve as the logistical arm of the Government of Liberia, it is imperative that the agency be granted an autonomous status to enable it to meet up with the demands and trends of global food security,” Representative Thomas intoned.
The National Food Assistance Agency (NFAA) Act is long overdue and reflects the demand and aspiration of the Liberian people for self-sufficient food sustainability and improved management of food accessibility.
“We therefore crave the indulgence of this Plenary to speedily pass this Act, thereby laying a strong legal foundation for the logistics of food donation to the Government of Liberia,” he added.
