EPA Shuts Down Conex MD SOW Slaughterhouse in Careysburg Over Health and Environmental Violations
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has officially ordered the closure of Conex MD SOW and Associates Slaughterhouse in Careysburg following a detailed investigation into the facility's operations. The action, taken on September 24, 2024, comes after multiple complaints raised concerns about serious health and environmental risks associated with the slaughterhouse.
Key Findings of the EPA Investigation include: Lack of Environmental Permits.
The investigation revealed that Conex MD SOW had been operating without valid environmental permits, violating local regulations intended to protect public health and the environment.
The slaughterhouse was found to be discharging untreated wastewater and effluent directly into the surrounding environment, posing a pollution threat to nearby communities.
Livestock from the facility were allowed to roam freely, causing damage to local crops and contributing to human-animal conflicts in the area.
Poor waste management practices led to unpleasant odors and a decline in air quality, putting residents' health at risk.
The EPA has ordered the facility to halt all operations and cease accepting livestock.
According to the EPA, Conex MD SOW will face a fine of US$5,000, to be paid to the Liberian Revenue Authority.
The company must engage with the EPA to address and mitigate the environmental damage and ensure future compliance with the Environmental Protection and Management Law of Liberia.
