Weah Accuses Unity Party of “Criminal Efforts” to Remove House Speaker Koffa

The political leader of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), former President George Weah, has leveled serious accusations against the Unity Party-led government under President Joseph Boakai. He claims the government is attempting to remove House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa through "criminal efforts" funded by what he described as "ill-gotten funds" from the National Coffers.

This accusation comes against a backdrop of increasing political tension in Liberia, where the CDC and Unity Party have been at odds since the 2023 elections. The Unity Party, which has historically been a significant political force in Liberia, won a substantial number of seats in the House of Representatives, while the CDC has faced criticism over its governance and economic challenges.

In a strongly worded statement, Weah condemned these alleged actions as a direct threat to Liberia's democratic institutions and legislative processes. He characterized the attempts to oust Speaker Koffa as "political chicanery," warning that such maneuvers could set a dangerous precedent for governance in the country.

"Any attempt to manipulate the legislative branch for partisan gain is an affront to the democratic principles upon which Liberia is built," Weah stated. He defended Speaker Koffa, noting, "He has served with dedication and integrity, and any effort to remove him illegally under the guise of political expediency is a desperate and cowardly tactic that must be condemned by all who value the rule of law."

Weah also urged CDC lawmakers to resist involvement in the alleged plot, cautioning them against being swayed by financial incentives or political pressure. He emphasized that those who participate in such schemes would face "significant political consequences" and risk betraying the trust of their constituents.

The former president’s remarks come amidst reports of increasing tension within the CDC and concerns that the attempted removal of Speaker Koffa could destabilize the governance process in Liberia. Critics argue that undermining the legislative branch threatens the checks and balances essential for a functioning democracy.

Weah concluded his statement by calling on all Liberians to remain vigilant and united in defending the integrity of national institutions, stressing the importance of protecting the country’s democracy from undue interference.
