KOOL 919 FM CEO Onanuga Accuses Melvin Snowe of Being a “Con Artist”

Monrovia, Liberia: In a recent Facebook post, Ambassador Onanuga expressed serious concerns about Melvin Snowe, a well-known Liberian politician. He described Snowe as a “con artist,” warning that he is someone who deceives others to gain personal benefit, often at the expense of the country.
Onanuga recalled an alarming incident in 2006 when Snowe, while serving as President of Liberia, nearly sold out the country. He alleged that Snowe took money from Taiwan and forged letters to alter Liberia’s foreign policies. This occurred after Snowe was mistakenly elected as the representative of Montserrado County. Fortunately, Snowe’s actions were exposed before they could cause long-term harm.
Onanuga voiced his current concerns, stating that Snowe might still be undermining the country for personal gain. He emphasized that a man without morals, principles, or dignity is dangerous to society and expressed hope that God would protect Liberia from such individuals.
Edwin Melvin Snowe, Jr., a prominent Liberian politician, has held key political roles, including Speaker of the House of Representatives and, more recently, Senator for Bomi County. Despite his high profile, Snowe’s career has been marred by multiple controversies and serious allegations.
2007 Bribery and Misappropriation Allegations
In January 2007, Snowe faced accusations of bribery and misappropriating funds during his tenure as Speaker of the House. Although the Supreme Court reinstated him after a brief removal, he eventually resigned in February 2007, citing concerns about legislative procedures. Investigations into his financial dealings at the Liberia Petroleum Refining Corporation followed, but no conclusive legal action was taken.
Allegations of Corruption and Human Rights Violations
Snowe has also been accused of more serious crimes, including theft of state property, rape, human rights abuses, and even murder. These allegations have generated significant public debate, particularly due to his association with former President Charles Taylor. However, it is crucial to note that these remain allegations, with no concrete legal convictions.
Controversies in Bomi County
Snowe’s actions in Bomi County have also drawn criticism. He has been accused of negotiating mineral concessions in ways that benefit his personal interests, allegedly at the expense of the county’s welfare. Specifically, Snowe is accused of helping to waive taxes owed by the Western Cluster mining company, leading to calls for his impeachment.
Public Disputes and Criticisms
Snowe’s public behavior has also sparked controversy. In March 2025, he became involved in a public dispute with Assistant Foreign Minister Saywhar Nana Gbaa during a Senate hearing. Snowe’s harsh treatment of Gbaa led to widespread criticism, with some former officials labeling him a “greedy gut politician.” Critics condemned his actions, even describing them as a form of gender-based violence.
While Melvin Snowe has undeniably played a significant role in Liberia’s political landscape, his career has been characterized by repeated allegations of corruption and misconduct. From bribery and misappropriation to accusations of human rights violations and personal gain at the country’s expense, Snowe’s actions continue to stir debate in Liberia’s political scene.
