PAC joint committee Chair Rep. Gahr Cautions Legislative Caucus Ahead of SONA Amid Political Crisis

Monrovia Liberia– As political tensions escalate within the House of Representatives, Margibi County District 5 Representative Clarence Gahr has issued a stern warning to the Rule of Law Legislative Caucus regarding plans to disrupt today’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) by President Joseph Boakai.

The Rule of Law Legislative Caucus, led by Representative Musa Hassan Bility, recently announced its intention to boycott the address.

This decision stems from ongoing disputes over legislative independence and the recent suspension of several Caucus members accused of disrupting legislative functions.

Speaking to reporters at his Capitol Building office recently, Representative Gahr condemned any attempt to disturb the address, describing such actions as a betrayal of the trust placed in lawmakers by their constituents.

“It would be better if they don’t attend. If they come and cause disruptions, our rules are clear. Section 40.2 explicitly states that no member shall disturb the business of the House. Any attempt to harass anyone on the grounds of the Capitol will be met with the full force of the law,” Representative Gahr stated.

He further reaffirmed his support for removing the minority bloc Speaker, despite his ties to the CDC, of which Speaker Koffa is a key member.

Representative Gahr had received criticisms from his constituency following his decision to pledge support for Majority Bloc Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon.

He clarified that his decision was prompted by the failure of Minority Bloc Speaker Fonati Koffa to work in the interest of the Liberian people.

“I received backlash for my decision, but I stand by it. Speaker Koffa’s leadership has not been in line with the expectations of the Liberian people,” Gahr asserted.

The Margibi County lawmaker further accused Speaker Koffa of mismanaging public funds and manipulating the national budget.

He cited examples of budgetary irregularities dating back to Koffa’s tenure as Deputy Speaker in 2022 and claimed these practices have continued under his current leadership.

“One of the most damaging actions by Speaker Koffa is the blatant violation of legislative procedures, which continues to hinder the progress of this country,” Representative Gahr said.

Substantiating his claims, Representative Gahr outlined instances of alleged corruption and budgetary manipulation.

He further described Speaker Koffa’s actions as “insensitive” and called for immediate reforms to restore accountability within the legislature.

“Speaker Koffa’s corrupt actions are a betrayal of the privilege granted to him by his people,” Gahr added.

As tensions remain high, all eyes are on the State of the Nation Address, with the public eagerly anticipating how the ongoing political crisis will unfold.
