LTA Grants Starlink Provisional License for Nationwide Internet Coverage

The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) has granted Starlink a one-year provisional license, marking a great step toward revolutionizing internet access in Liberia.

This provisional license will allow regulators to evaluate the impact of Starlink’s satellite-based services on existing telecom providers while establishing quality-of-service and customer protection standards for this new technology.

For the first time in Liberia’s history, Starlink is set to deliver universal internet coverage, making it possible for anyone, anywhere in the country to access high-speed internet.

This breakthrough aligns with the National ICT Policy's objective of achieving universal connectivity, a priority under President Boakai’s administration.

In addition to expanding internet access, Starlink will serve as a backup system in case the ACE fiber optic cable, which has experienced three outages in the past year, goes down again. This redundancy will help ensure reliable connectivity nationwide.

The LTA has confirmed that Starlink is expected to officially launch in Liberia within the next few weeks. 

With a network of over 6,000 low-orbit satellites, Starlink will provide high-speed internet directly to user kits on the ground, catering to both residential and business customers.

Liberians will be able to purchase Starlink kits through the Starlink website or from LTA-licensed Internet Service Providers (ISPs) authorized to resell the products. The service will also offer flexibility, with kits available for installation on moving vehicles such as ships, planes, and cars, providing seamless connectivity across a range of platforms.

The LTA is currently finalizing commercial pricing with Starlink to ensure the service is affordable for the Liberian market. The pricing will include a one-time fee for the Starlink kit and a monthly flat rate for data, with unlimited data packages available under Starlink’s fair usage policy.
