Senator Nimely Declares Liberia’s Fight Against Illicit Drugs a Lost Cause
Grand Gedeh County Senator, Thomas Yaya Nimely, has voiced grave concerns, stating that Liberia has already lost its battle against illicit drugs.
According to Nimely, the drug situation in the country has only worsened since President Joseph Boakai’s "Rescue" government declared a war on drug abuse.
Nimely, a former rebel leader turned senator, criticized the government’s inability to make meaningful progress despite its strong declarations.
“You cannot make pronouncements that you are unable to fulfill,” he remarked, referring to the administration’s failed commitment to addressing the growing drug crisis.
In January, President Boakai, during his State of the Nation Address, acknowledged that illicit drugs posed a public health emergency in Liberia.
This pronouncement was followed by a symbolic public drug test involving the president and other high-ranking officials, as well as the creation of a presidential committee to spearhead the fight against drug abuse.
However, since its formation, the committee has made little headway in curbing the issue.
Senator Nimely further emphasized that the ongoing leadership instability at the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) signals a deeper failure in the nation’s fight against drug importation and abuse.
He expressed doubt about the country's ability to regain control of the situation under the current administration’s approach.
