Liberian Senate Urges Diplomatic Mission in India amid Rising Security Concerns

Monrovia, Liberia: The Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, chaired by Montserrado County Senator Abraham Dillon, has vowed to press the Executive Branch, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to probe and establish a diplomatic mission in India “aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of Liberians residing in the country.”

The Senate conveyed this crucial statement following the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan, which resulted in heightened tensions, particularly over the Kashmir region, and escalated recently due to military exchanges and terrorist attacks.

Liberian students in India had raised urgent concerns regarding their safety and the lack of diplomatic support.

In response to that, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Senator Dillon, disclosed that the committee “has held several interactions with Liberian students in India via Zoom.”

"At present, there is no immediate threat to the safety of Liberian students as a direct consequence of the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict.” Senator Dillon assures.

He made the remarks while addressing foreign affairs issues during the commencement of the second quarter of the second session of the 55th Legislature on Capitol Hill.

Recently, a senior student of information technology at the Ludhiana College of Engineering and Technology, Brian Wahid, described “the absence of a Liberian embassy in India as a critical gap during times of crisis.”

Also addressing that, Senator Dillon emphasized “the urgency of establishing a Liberian diplomatic mission in India to cater to the government's diplomatic responsibilities and ensure proper representation.”

Meanwhile, the Montserrado County Senator also urged Liberians to “recognize and appreciate recent improvements in public service sectors.”

He specifically commended the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) and the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) for what he described as a “profound level of stability” in their recent operations.

Senator Dillon expressed optimism that “the continued progress in these sectors would significantly boost the national economy.”

He stressed that “unity and national pride are vital for Liberia to remain competitive among other African nations.”

He further encouraged fellow senators to “prioritize employment opportunities for qualified Liberians over foreign nationals,” noting that “providing jobs for young Liberians is crucial for national growth and family sustainability.”
