Child Drowns in Drainage at Waiver Street

Paynesville, Liberia: Residents of the Waiver Street Community in Paynesville City were engulfed with shock on late Wednesday following the sad death of a boy believed to be between the ages of 4 and 6 years who reportedly drowned in drainage in the area.
Family sources confirmed that the deceased, who was a school-going kid and only identified as K.O. Mulbah, was pronounced dead a few minutes after he was rushed to a hospital in Paynesville.
Eyewitnesses' accounts revealed that the kid was seen floating over a deep drainage before rescue efforts could begin. According to residents, the situation is believed to have occurred after a heavy downpour of rain on Wednesday that led to the flooding of some parts of the Waverly Street Community.
Lance Gray, one of the residents on the scene, told K-News reporters that community dwellers got to know about the situation when one of the two kids who went along to play with the deceased came running in tears.
According to him, rescue efforts were made, but at the time the kid had begun to be helpless in response to his breath. "I was in my yard this evening when I saw a little child running, and I asked him, 'Why are you running?' He said my friend left in the water. I decided to check; while standing, I saw the child floating on top of the water in the drainage.
"That's how I brought him out of the water, and other people came around, and we took him out of the water. But he was no longer breathing straight. Later he was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead," one of the residents, Lance Gray, narrated.
Community dwellers in the area are calling on the government through the relevant authorities to ensure a proper drainage system in the area before the peak of the rainy season.
