Liberia Launches Ambitious $700 Million Agriculture Development Plan to Boost Self-Food Sufficiency

Monrovia, Liberia – The agricultural landscape of Liberia is set for a significant transformation as Agriculture Minister Alexander Nuetah announced the launch of an audacious "National Agriculture Development Plan." This initiative comes with the catchy slogan "Liberians Feed Yourself," aiming to propel the nation towards self-sufficiency in the production of its most-consumed commodities.
In a press briefing at the Ministry of Information, Minister Nuetah laid out the framework of a five-year strategic vision that aligns with President Boakai's goal for Liberian prosperity. Central to this vision is the development of 50,000 hectares of lowland dedicated to bolstering rice production. This endeavor is not just about meeting domestic demand but also about redirecting funds typically spent on rice importation towards other national priorities.
The ambitious six-year plan, valued at over US$700 million, represents a significant investment in the country's agricultural potential. According to Dr. Nuetah, it is a comprehensive effort that goes beyond rice, with cassava, cocoa, vegetables, and fisheries also included to ensure an all-encompassing boost to food production.
The plan will focus on key regions such as Bong, Nimba, Lofa and amongst other counties.
