Paynesville Legislative caucus gets 20 days ultimatum to do drug Test or risk massive protest.

Paynesville: The lead campaigner for the passage of the amended drugs law in Liberia has given 20 days ultimatum to members of the Paynesville Legislative caucus to commence the taking of the drug test so as means of leading by example.

According to Lawrence Dayougar, his decision to call on members of that august body is due to the statement made by President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, something which he believes the Paynesville Legislative caucus is no exception of.

It can be recalled that during the state of the nation addressed by President Joseph Nyumah Boakai on January 29, 2024 declare drug as epidemic in Liberia and by declaring Drugs and Substance abuse as a Public Health Emergency, something many believes is a major boast to in the fight against the illicit drugs in Liberia.

Already the Plenary of the Liberian Senate has passed into law the ‘Controlled Drug and Substances Act of 2014’’.

The Senate took the decision in its Session last Thursday, November 10, 2022, following hours of debate among Senators.

Taking the decision, the Senate categorized drug crime into two categories, hence making it non-bailable and bailable depending on the gravity of the crime.

Dayougar pointed out that the National legislature is not in search of drug users as well as in Liberia

The head of the group revealed that at the end of the 20 days ultimatum any lawmaker refusing to conduct his or her drugs test will be exposed.

“Like for the Five Lawmakers in Paynesville after the 20 days and failed to take their drugs test we will exposed you or we asked for signatures as well as go the capitol building and cause noise behind you until you take the drugs test” Dayougar said.

Speaking to this station in Paynesville following the state of the nation address Dayougar is however warning lawmakers that there will be no official communication informing any lawmaker to do a drug test.

Meanwhile, the secretary general of the institution said the statement by the chief Executive shows his willingness and commitment to the fight against illicit drugs across the Country.

Steve Dahn pointed out that the pronouncement by the Liberian leader came as a surprise and as such the fight against illicit drugs is taking a different shape, something which he said is in the best interest of the ordinary Citizens.
