LiMA Holds Pre-joining Familiarization Seminar for Cadets at LMTI

The Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA), through its Department of Manning, held a two-day pre-joining familiarization seminar for cadets at the Liberia Maritime Training Institute (LMTI) in collaboration with the school’s teaching staff from April 9-10, 2024. The seminar is part of the Department of Manning deliverables earmarked for the year 2024 under the Authority’s multi-year strategic plan.
According to LiMA’s Director of Manning, Ms. Hennistta Wonder Nyangbe, the Implementation of Training scheme is geared towards the provision of quality and competent seafarers and to help cadets get acquainted with the requisite knowledge required for joining vessels.
Ms. Nyangbe highlighted the Pre-Joining travel familiarities required of seafarers, qualifications and steps that lead up to departure as a seafarer.
This two day seminar hosted the Deputy Commissioner designate for Vessel Registration and Safety, Mr. John F. Harvey. The veteran sailor spoke to the cadets on the topic: “the Dos and Don’ts to keep you afloat while sailing”. Mr. Harvey also shared his experiences with the cadets about being a seafarer in his earlier years.
Also, the Associate Director of Safety Inspection Survey and Audit at LiMA, Mr. Emmanuel Mezoh Dolakeh spoke on post sea expectations. He elaborated on career opportunities for cadets post sea and gave them in-depth understanding on opportunities that come with seafaring.
On Day two, the Director of Policy and Compliance and International Relations of LiMA, Mr. Roger Teah spoke in detail on the benefits of the Maritime Labor Convention (MLC) Compliance for Seafarers. He explained what the Maritime Labour Convention is, how and why it was formulated; the other pillars of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) that support the MLC and how it serves as a guiding mechanism for seafarers.
