Liberian Senate Confirms Judge Ceaineh D. Clinton-Johnson as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court

The Liberian Senate has confirmed Judge Ceaineh D. Clinton-Johnson as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia. This confirmation follows her recent nomination by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.

Judge Johnson will fill the position left vacant by the late Associate Justice Joseph Nagbe. Her confirmation came after receiving unanimous approval from 22 Senators, making her the first nominee to be confirmed under the newly amended Senate rule requiring a two-thirds majority vote for lifetime presidential nominees.

The Liberian Senate recently revised its rules, mandating a two-thirds majority, or 20 votes, for the confirmation of lifetime presidential appointees. This rule change aims to ensure greater consensus and scrutiny in the confirmation process.

Additionally, the Senate reaffirmed its previous decision that all tenured presidential nominees also require a two-thirds majority for confirmation. This decision was upheld despite a motion filed by Bong County Senator Prince Moye, who sought to revert to a simple majority vote for tenured positions. Senator Moye, who chairs the Senate Ways, Means, and Finance Committee, failed to defend his motion within the stipulated deadline.
