Government of Liberia Launches Mission to Repatriate Buduburam Refugees from Ghana

Monrovia: The Government of Liberia, led by Deputy Minister Jeddi Armah, has initiated a crucial mission in collaboration with the Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC) to facilitate the voluntary return of 700 Liberians affected by recent demolitions at the Buduburam Refugee Camp in Ghana's Central Region.
The Gomoa District Traditional Council's demolition of 150 acres of land on February 27, 2024, where the Buduburam Refugee settlement had stood since Liberia's civil war began in 1990, prompted legal actions due to alleged illegal occupation.
Responding to the crisis, President Joseph Nyumah Boakai mandates an interagency working group, including the LRRRC, MoFA, LNP, LIS, MIA, and MoGCSP, to plan and oversee the repatriation process, set to commence on May 16, 2024.
During their mission in Ghana, the delegation will organize essential logistics, ensuring safe passage from Ghana to Liberia via Cote d'Ivoire, to ensure the repatriates' secure return alongside their belongings.
