Suspension of Two Workers from First Lady’s Office Sparks Criticism

The recent suspension of two staff members from the office of Madam Kartumu Y. Boakai has generated widespread debate.

A veteran politician and activist, who preferred to remain anonymous, criticized the decision as a “cheap suspension,” arguing that the individuals should have been removed permanently, not just suspended.

The controversy began after two employees, Varflay Holmes and Lemuel Vah, were accused of defrauding a Liberian parent of US$4,000 under the false promise of securing scholarships for the parent’s children to study in Great Britain. The Office of the First Lady announced their suspension without pay for one month on January 20, 2025, following a thorough review of the situation.

Holmes, a senior official in the First Lady’s office, admitted to accepting the money, but clarified it was intended to assist the victims in accessing a partially funded scholarship. Despite this, the First Lady took swift action, noting that both Holmes and Vah have refunded the full US$4,000 to the victims.

Press Release from the First Lady Office R.L

In the press statement, Madam Boakai emphasized her commitment to integrity and professionalism within her office, reiterating that it must reflect the dignity and respect befitting its role in serving the people of Liberia. The office also expressed regret for any distress caused to the victims of the fraud.

The incident has raised concerns about corruption and accountability, with critics pointing to ongoing challenges within the ruling Unity Party despite its commitment to reform.
