Representative Briggs Mensah Expresses Frustration After Being Denied Floor Time

Monrovia, Liberia: Tensions rose in the House of Representatives during regular session on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, as Representative Moima Briggs Mensah of Bong County Electoral District #6 publicly voiced her disappointment after being denied the opportunity to speak during Legislative Session.

The Bong County lawmaker, known for her vocal advocacy on issues ranging from women’s rights to rural development, was visibly frustrated following the incident.

She said repeated efforts to gain recognition from the Speaker of the House, Richard Nagbe Koon, were overlooked, leaving her unable to contribute to critical discussions.

“I came here elected by the people to speak on their behalf,” Rep. Briggs Mensah said. “To be denied the floor is not just a disregard for me but a disregard for the voices of the constituents I represent.”

She was denied during a discussion on the floor relating to a communication from Senator Edwin Snowe about ECOWAS delegates, which was rejected by some members of the House of Representatives.

The incident sparked concern among political observers and civil society advocates who warn that such actions could erode democratic debate in the legislative body.

Colleagues close to the representative described the moment as “discouraging” and emphasized equal speaking opportunities for all elected officials, regardless of political alignment or gender.

This isn't the first time the House has faced criticism over procedural fairness. Analysts say it underscores a broader issue of transparency and inclusiveness in legislative proceedings.

Representative Mensah has vowed not to remain silent, asserting her commitment to press for answers and ensure such treatment is not repeated.

“The people did not send me to the Capitol Building to sit in silence,” she affirmed.
