Liberian Gov’t Allocates $2 Million for Nimba County Senatorial By-Election

Monrovia, Liberia :The Government of Liberia has committed $2 million to support the upcoming senatorial by-election in Nimba County, which is scheduled to take place on April 22. This funding allocation was confirmed by the Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah, during a recent briefing.
The financial support from the government aims to ensure the smooth and efficient conduct of the elections, covering various logistical and operational needs. The NEC has been working closely with government officials and local authorities to ensure all preparations are in place for the crucial electoral process.
Madam Lansanah further disclosed that the NEC issued 11 nomination packages for potential candidates seeking to run in the by-election. However, only eight packages were returned. Of these, seven were submitted by male aspirants, and one by a female candidate. This reflects a continued gender imbalance in political participation, with female representation still lagging behind male counterparts in the country’s political arena.
The Nimba County by-election follows the vacancy left by the former senator, and it is expected to be a key contest with significant political implications for the region and the country as a whole. The election is also seen as a reflection of Liberia’s broader political landscape as the nation prepares for future elections.
The NEC has assured the public that all necessary measures will be in place to guarantee free, fair, and transparent elections, and that voter education programs are underway to ensure citizens are fully informed ahead of the poll.
As the election day approaches, political analysts and residents of Nimba County alike are closely watching the developments, especially in regard to the relatively low number of female candidates. Advocacy groups have been calling for increased efforts to promote women’s participation in Liberia’s political processes.
