ECOWAS Struggles to Recognize Majority Leader "House Speaker" Dispatches a Second Mediation Team to Address Leadership Impasse

Monrovia, Liberia: A high-level delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is set to return to Liberia on Sunday, March 23, 2025, to continue its mediation efforts aimed at resolving the ongoing leadership crisis in the Lower House of Liberia’s 55th Legislature.
The advent of the ECOWAS delegation tomorrow will mark the second attempt by the West African regional organization to resolve the dispute, following a failed mediation in 2024.
The delegation is expected to be led by Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, former UN Under-Secretary-General, and will include key ECOWAS officials, such as Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah and Mr. Ebenezer Asiedu, among others.
The visit is especially timely as Liberia's Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a bill of information filed by embattled Speaker J. Fonati Koffa on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.
The Supreme Court’s decision on the bill of information filed by embattled Speaker Koffa could significantly influence the resolution of the leadership impasse at the Lower House.
During their stay, the ECOWAS delegation is expected to meet with a wide range of political figures, including President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Chief Justice of Liberia, lawmakers, and civil society actors to discuss potential solutions to the deadlock.
This renewed intervention comes after months of legislative paralysis caused by the ongoing leadership dispute within the House of Representatives.
Despite previous mediation efforts failing, the involvement of both the judiciary and ECOWAS has raised hopes for a possible resolution to prolonged political conflict.
The delegation's comprehensive approach in engaging with various political and government representatives will be seen as a crucial gateway to finding a lasting solution to the crisis, thereby restoring stability to the House of Representatives.
