Monrovia City Mayor Faces Financial Intelligence Agency Probe over Corruption Allegations

Monrovia, Liberia: The head of the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC), Mayor John Charuk Siafa, is the subject of an investigation by the Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA) regarding allegations of large-scale corruption at the corporation.
In keeping with its legal responsibility, the FIA has officially communicated with Mayor Siafa regarding serious allegations of corruption at the MCC.
According to the FIA, it has in its possession intelligence on various activities of the MCC, which includes allegations of arbitrary deduction of employees' salaries, the issuance of fictitious receipts to taxpayers, ghost employees on the payroll, and duplicate names appearing on the payroll.
The FIA, headed by Mohammed A. Nasser, has requested that Mayor Siafa make available documents, including payroll data from the Ministry of Finance from March 2024 to the present, payroll submissions made to the Civil Service Agency, and all MCC payroll submissions made to banks from March 2024 to the present.
Other documents requested are details of MCC bank accounts (including account numbers, account titles, and bank names), any other payroll documentation necessary for financial investigation, and copies of all MCC receipts issued to taxpayers from January 2025 onward.
All reports from the internal investigation conducted by MCC and
Mayor John Siafa is expected to provide all of the requested information to the FIA to facilitate the investigation.
Compounding Mayor Siafa’s nightmare, Madam Queen Johnson, a devout member of the Unity Party, has also accused the Monrovia City Mayor of alleged corruption.
Madam Johnson alleges that Mayor Siafa has employed his personal staff from his printing press at the MCC and also appointed his daughter as Revenue Director.
