‘’ We Need Clarity” Senate to Summon CBL Officials on Budget Disparities

Capitol Hill: Members of the Liberian Senate has mandated its joint Committees on Public Account and Audit, Banking and Currency to summon authorities of the Central Bank of Liberia and the officer in charge of the Liberia Revenue Authority to provide clarity on what the public believe is creating more confusion regarding statements made by then President Weah and President Joseph Boakai on the US$40 and 20.5 million saga.

 

Recently, Liberians witnessed the transition from the Coalition for Democratic Change regime of former President George Manneh Weah revealing to Liberians that a total of over US$40 million was left in the country’s operational account at the Central Bank of Liberia, information Current President Joseph Nyumah Boakai has rejected during the state of the nation address up capitol Hill on January 29, 2024.

 

In rejection to President Weah Claim, President Boakai delivering his first State of the Nation address before members of the 55th national Legislature in a joint session, the Liberian Chief Executive said the Liberian government currently has in its operational account a total of US$20.5 million, contrary to the US$40M as pronounced by Weah in his final message to the nation.

 

The statements made by the former and current Liberian leaders shows a questionable balance of US$19.5 million,  something that has caused serious doubt in the minds of several Citizens as well as members of the Liberian Senate and the House of Representatives. An act that prompted  River Gee County Senator Francis Dopoe to officially communicate to the plenary on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, craving that august body to summon authorities of the CBL and LRA to clarify the actual amount in question.

 

When his communication was placed on the floor for plenary’s deliberations, Senator Dopoe recounted that similar contradictory statements was made in 2018 during the transitional period which sparked serious debate in the public.
