WFP, BRAC Empower Local Farmers in Bong County

BONG: In the heart of Bong County, Liberia, small-scale farmers grappled with challenges until the timely intervention of the World Food Programme (WFP) and BRAC.

These farmers, earnest in their pursuit, expressed their struggles and aspirations, calling for additional support to enhance their productivity.

"We were struggling with our small farms until WFP and BRAC came to support our work," shared a local farmer.

With a shared vision, the farmers appealed to their partners to expand the project, enabling them to increase rice production and supply more schools with nourishing food.

They emphasized the need for machinery and materials to streamline their operations.

"We want to do more work but lack all the necessary equipment," emphasized a determined woman among the farmers.

The resilient women, eager to contribute more, highlighted the lack of essential equipment hindering their efforts.

WFP Country Director, Aliou Diongue, underlined the tangible impact on local farmers, revealing financial support and a commitment to collaborate with both small and large farmers nationwide.

"This is to show the impact of WFP on local farmers in Bong County. WFP is also providing money for the local farmers, and we promise to continue the collaboration with more small and large farmers across the country," reassured Aliou Diongue.

George A. Odingo, BRAC Associate Director for Agriculture, stressed the dual importance of contributing to food security and empowering farmers with knowledge and skills. He emphasized the significance of expanding agricultural practices, ensuring food security and income generation.

"One of the important things is to contribute to food security in Liberia. Giving farmers knowledge and skills to expand their land and produce is also important. By producing, they will be food secure and have income at the same time they will be supporting the government and also foreign exchange," articulated George A. Odinga.

In Bong County, the collaborative efforts target six groups, focusing on production, crop management, and value addition for diversified livelihoods. The emphasis is on building the capacities of small-scale farmers, particularly women, fostering their participation in the economic development of Liberia.

"The contribution is to ensure that we build small-scale farmers, particularly women so that they participate in the economic development of the country," echoed the sentiments of the program.

The Ministry of Agriculture's Food Security and Resilience program, supported by WFP, stands as a pivotal initiative. Minister Janie Cooper acknowledged WFP's consistent partnership, praising their innovative solutions.  Cooper emphasized that achieving food security in Liberia requires collective efforts, with international partners playing a crucial role.

"Some innovations that they are bringing to it, we all look at the problem and WFP has proven to be a partner. They have been with the ministry throughout food security in Liberia," Minister Janie Cooper explained.

In a nod to WFP and BRAC, the minister expressed gratitude for their support, recognizing the invaluable contribution to local farmers and the broader government agenda.

The collaboration embodies a beacon of hope for Liberia, showcasing that with innovative approaches and international cooperation, achieving food security is not only possible but a shared responsibility.
