The Women in Media Development (WIMDeV) has successfully trained more than 25 journalists in Value Clarification and Attitude Transformation (VCAT) focusing on Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR).

This program, conducted over three days, aims to encourage ethical decision-making, enhance professional standards, and promote responsible journalism in SRHR contexts.

The VCAT training sessions tackled widespread misconceptions and stigmas related to SRHR, including issues like abortion and discrimination. Journalists learned strategies to counteract these misconceptions with factual and unbiased reporting.
Additionally, participants had the opportunity to discuss ethical dilemmas in SRHR reporting, emphasizing the importance of understanding public health law before covering SRHR topics, comprehending the issues and their history, and demonstrating awareness and empathy.

Siatta Scott Johnson, Executive Director of WIMDeV, emphasized the training's goals and importance in her opening remarks. She stated that the program aims to improve journalists' understanding and reporting skills on SRHR topics.

The training focused on value clarification, addressing biases and stereotypes in reporting, and comprehending the broader implications of SRHR issues.

Madam Johnson underscored the importance of value clarification, explaining that journalists must first recognize their own biases and preconceived notions about SRHR. She noted that the training aims to provide journalists with tools to challenge these biases and stereotypes, ensuring their reporting is fair, inclusive, and informative.

"The objective is to foster ethical and accurate journalism that respects and upholds the rights of individuals regarding sexual and reproductive health," Johnson said.

As Journalists play a critical role in shaping public perception and policy,  the WIMDeV Executive Director noted that it's essential that their work reflects a thorough understanding and respect for these issues.

The training also addressed ethical dilemmas in SRHR reporting, encouraging participants to engage in thoughtful discussions about the complexities of covering sensitive topics.

By addressing these challenges directly, WIMDeV aims to empower journalists to create content that not only informs but also promotes a more inclusive and understanding society.

The training which lasted for three days was organized by the Communication and Advocacy Committee of the Amplifying Rights Network.

Through this initiative, WIMDeV continues to lead in promoting responsible and ethical journalism, ensuring SRHR issues are reported with the accuracy and sensitivity they require.
