Police Launch Probe into CDC Chairman’s Arrest as Senator McGill Demands Justice

Monrovia, Liberia: The Liberia National Police (LNP) has launched a formal investigation into the controversy surrounding the arrest of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) National Chairman Attorney Augustine Janga Kowo, amid rising public outcry over the manner in which the arrest was executed.

In a statement released Monday, June 9, 2025, the LNP confirmed that Attorney Kowo was arrested based on “probable cause” but noted that he was “immediately released upon arrival” at the police headquarters.

However, the forceful approach by LNP officers during the arrest has sparked public condemnation and drawn attention across political lines.

The police acknowledged the concerns and announced that the Police Inspector General, Colonel Gregory Coleman, has directed the Professional Standards Division to review all video footage and relevant evidence related to the incident. The internal probe is aimed at determining whether the officers involved acted within the bounds of professional conduct and constitutional rights.

The LNP assured the public of transparency in the ongoing process, vowing to make the investigation findings public once complete. As tensions mount, the police have also cautioned against misinformation and urged Liberians to remain calm while the process unfolds.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the CDC Legislative Caucus, Margibi County Senator Nathaniel McGill, has welcomed the LNP’s decision to investigate the incident.

Senator McGill called on the police to pursue a full-scale inquiry that identifies and holds accountable any officers responsible for violating Chairman Kowo’s rights.

The Margibi County Senator stated that CDC remains committed to peaceful democratic engagement, noting that the party would support any legal process aimed at addressing misconduct within the security sector.

He stressed that CDC supporters, as well as members of other opposition political parties, must not allow the ongoing trial regarding the Capitol Building fire incident to become a catalyst for chaos.

According to Senator McGill, the legal proceedings involving some CDC lawmakers should be met with calm, discipline, and respect for due process.
