Government Of Liberia Warns Oppositions Against Misinterpration Of Rule Of Law Amid Capital Building Arson Prosecution

Monrovia, Liberia: The Government of Liberia has strongly condemned what it describes as the opposition political party's deliberate misinterpretation of the rule of law, following the ongoing prosecution of four lawmakers by the Supreme Court in connection with the recent arson attack on the Capitol Building.
Those indicted include former House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, and Representatives Dixon Seboe, Abu Kamara, Prescilla Cooper, and Jacob Debee II. The group faces multiple felony charges including Arson, Criminal Mischief, Criminal Facilitation, Reckless Endangerment, Attempted Murder, and Criminal Conspiracy.
The charges stem from a fire that damaged sections of the Capitol during a heated dispute over legislative leadership earlier this year.
Recently, a coalition of opposition political parties staged a protest at the Supreme Court, denouncing the arrests of the implicated lawmakers as arbitrary and politically motivated.

However, the government of Liberia through its Deputy Spokesperson Daniel O. Sando Speaking at (MICAT) regular press briefing on June 10, 2025 stressed that for Liberia’s democracy to flourish, the rule of law must be upheld and respected by all.

The Government Spokesperson disclosed that the process is transparent, the Government Of Liberia have international experts assisting with the investigation, adding those linked to the crime must be held accountable that there will be no impunity.
Minister Sando further clarified that despite the initial arrests of Representatives Frank Saah Foko and Marvin Cole for allegedly making incendiary remarks before the incident remarks that raised suspicions of a possible motive, the Liberia National Police (LNP), under the leadership of Inspector General Col. Gregory Coleman, released the two lawmakers.
