"Commissioner Eugene Lenn Nagbe: A Legacy of Maritime Triumphs and Strategic Leadership in Liberia"
Resigning with two years remaining in his tenure, Eugene Lenn Nagbe, the Commissioner and CEO of the Liberia Maritime Authority, leaves an indelible mark on maritime history. Appointed in 2020 by President George Manneh Weah, Nagbe’s achievements are noteworthy. These include elevating Liberia to Category A of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, surpassing Panama in ship registry after three decades, and expanding international vessel registration.
Under Nagbe’s leadership, Liberia achieved milestones such as completing the LiMA headquarters, opening regional offices, and maintaining revenue quotas despite Covid-19 challenges. His tenure fortified Liberia’s flag state, port state, and ISPS regimes. He strategically enhanced competitiveness by offering scholarships, leading to Liberia’s chairmanship in the IMO’s Marine Environmental Protection Committee.
As Nagbe departs, Liberia witnesses historic growth in shipping registry and rejoining the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authority. He leaves after spearheading President Weah’s re-election campaign, citing a moral imperative to part ways with outgoing staff. Nagbe, eyeing a role in opposition politics, has submitted his resignation, effective January 18, 2024.
