The Liberian government with funding from the European Union is poised to officially break ground for the construction of electricity generation and distribution facilities in Grand Bassa and Sinoe Counties respectively.

According to a release on Thursday, May 2, 2024 by the Ministry of Finance, the project is intended for the construction of two separate 33KV electricity distribution networks in the cities of Buchanan and Greenville.

Upon completion of the project, the Ministry said it will provide the much-needed access to reliable and affordable electricity to the residents of the two cities.

These projects are being funded by the European Union under its ‘Rural Electrification Program, which prioritizes the Southeastern part of Liberia.

The statement added that over 12,000 customers in Buchanan will be connected on both single and three-phase pre-paid meters, while the city will also benefit from the installation of an estimated 825 led streetlights.

Also in Greenville City, 4,344 households will be connected as part of the project’s target to boost citizens’ access to electricity.

Along the kilometer route of said transmission line from the two megawatts, a mini hydro power plant will be constructed on the Sinoe River, while about 200 led streetlights will be installed in that Southeastern city.

The release noted that Finance and Development-Planning Minister, Boima Kamara, will represent the government of Liberia at the Friday, May 3, 2024’s groundbreaking ceremony, while the European Union Head of Delegation to Liberia, Nona Deprez, will represent the EU.

“This support from the European Union further demonstrates the European Union commitment to supporting Liberia in delivering key public services including energy,” it indicated.
